Hi All,
I have just got my 1969 3500 back home in my garage thats makes 2 P6bs i have now with my 1971 series 2 V8  and now have a real hard descision to make ie which is going to be no more  I preffer the series 2 because of the nice clocks/switch set up and i would like a NADA but my problem is my series 2 is rotton and a series 1 is not ie its been welded very good indeedy :? Now unless there is an idiots guide to swapping the S2 clocks into my S1 i have i big dilemma  Do i have a lookalike NADA with strip clock or spend forever welding the S2 up and make that a NADA lookalike i have attatched a couple of pics of the 2 cars guess which is which

There really shouldn't be too much debate there should there? That looks like an awful lot of welding time!

So how do you go about swapping bits onto the S1? First off try to use the existing body panels and doors (assuming they are the originals and fit right!). That way you avoid the oft reported here problems with getting doors to shut right and panels to line up. Even worth reskinning an existnig door if required!

For the interior re-arrangements, you will have most of the dash and most of the rest of the interior out anyway. So why not simply swap the wiring looms between the two cars? That way you don't spend hours head scratching as to how to modifiy the S1 wiring to accept S2 instruments - and it will be a much neater job and you'll be able to fault find it afterwards! The vast majority of the wiring is accessible from inside the car - just the engine bay that's awkward with the engine in. But you'd have the engine out simply to detail paint the engine bay wouldn't you? I've seen this done for converting LHD to RHD and it's not that scary. If you don't feel confident with electrics, then buy in an auto electrician to do it for you on site.

Thanks for the advice Chris and nice comment (The Roving Member) all the panels on S1 are near rust free except for osr door and as luck would have it the door on the S2 is pretty good so no worries there :) I hate elecs :( but with encouragement and advice i am willing to ave a go and i have the advantage of a complete donor car sitting right next to S1 :D Have i read somewhere that i will also need to change the wiper mechanism for the S2 type if i am going to fit PAS to S1 which the S2 does NOT have bugger  if there is anyone on the forum that has done any of the above jobs please share your advice  P.S forgot to mention after more investigation i have found that the only area that has not been finished off on S1 is a bit on the osr wheel arch easy peasy all the rest of car has been restored ie wheel arches inner/outr sills jack points inner wings. P.SS i have discovered that previous owner? has also fiited NEW rear calipers new flexi pipes all round some copper replacement pipes. New rear springs painted the De Dion tube elbows and asscosciated sus parts replaced a few bushes and also fitted part new exhaust SD1 heads onto the original 10.5:1 engine even the sill covers are nearly new and original Rover which still have the Rover stickers on them  So all in all the more i look and prod the better its getting which in my experience with cars is normally the opposite :? Ie the more you look and prod the worse it gets  well thats enough of my yap but i think you get the pic the S1 IS the better car bodily and structurally so is more of a dooable resto please keep the advice flowing lads and lasses

Sounds like decision made!

Personally I wouldn't fit PAS. Lucky (also an S1 V8) doesn't have it, and the more you improve the suspension the lighter the steering gets. I'm running 205 section tyres and conventional wisdom would have my arms straining like a gorrilla. In fact a larger anti roll bar and some decent front shocks have left the steering light enough that, not only have I cancelled my intended PAS retrofit, but I also expect to get away with a nice wood 14" steering wheel!

But you're right, if you want to retrofit PAS to an S1 V8 you need to change to the cable drive wiper system that is located on the passenger side out of the way of the bigger PAS steering box. You also need quite a lot of other fairly difficult to source junk, like the PAS pulley for the crank nose, the pump and bracket and the reservoir. Best talk to Ian Wilson if you're still determined to do it.

Not much of a descision really i am just picking what i think is the easier of the two to do thanks for the PAS info i may not fit it yet its just an thought at the moment :? but i would like to do the clock/instrument change :) I have got the engine running after who knows when it was run last but it ran good with no tapping or nasty noises so all sounding good so far except for a slight leak on rad so soldering today me thinks

I had to replace a wiring loom on Thunderdog when I was learning to weld - didn't pass that lesson

There weren't things like digital cameras back in those days, so I made a lot of drawings before taking wires off of anything. When you take the switch panel off for instance, take some digypics before taking wires off.

Wrap bits of masking tape around the ends of cables and write where they came from.

Saying all of that it was fairly obvious where everything went.

Try and get yoursef a bullet connector pliers (the ones that close them) as they are a godsend.

And make sure the bullets are clean when you reconnect them - use new outers as they are impossible to clean.

Best of luck with it :)

Quattro thats all good advice espescially the taking pics i never thought of that its probably something i would have thought of AFTER the dismantlement had begun

I fitted PAS to a P6b in the past but it was an S2 think the hardest bit was relocating the steering column back onto the spliney bit  i am going to fit elec f.pump and fan no vapour locks for me thanks
