Bought these tonight. P5/6 rostyles.

Bargain?

Johnny. :D

Ebay Item number: 4505565841

P.S. Does anyone know what tyres are to be fitted to these and can I go any larger?

Cheers!! :)

Hi Johnny,
What width are the wheels? The reason I ask is that I think there are two widths of rostyle wheel (I could be wrong on this one though) Some I believe are 5 inch and some are 5 1/2 inch, if you have 5 inch rims you would probably be better off sticking with 185 section tyres but with a 70 profile to compensate for the increase in rim diameter (185/70 R15) if you have the 5.5 inch rims you could safely go up to a 205 with a 65 profile (205/65 R15) now all this is completely hypothetical as without actually trying them on the car I cant tell you if they will fit under the arches! If you need to try out different variations on the rim width/suitable tyre size scenario I highly recommend Chris Longhursts tyre bible
Cheers

P.S I have a set of Jensen Interceptor rostyles for mine - but they are in a really bad way, flaking chrome and lots of rust now re-chroming is out of the question (about £250 per wheel if you can find someone to do it!), so I am going to get them blasted and paint them up like the ones you see on MGBs and Mk1 & 11 cortinas.

I seem to remember a feature in Practical classics a few monthes ago where someone was offering a re-furb for rostyles at £130 per wheel.

I had P5 rostyles on my estate but I can't remember the tyre sizes. They certainly fitted under the arches OK.

Thanks to both of you.

I am collecting the wheels tommorow. I'll measure them and let you know.

Johnny. :D

Got the wheels home and they've cleaned up very well.

They are definitely 5 inch deep as opposed to 5.5.

Does anyone know how wide I should actually go? Is there any chance I could compromise and go to 195?

:D

Well done Johnny I missed end of auction otherwise I would have fought you over them...

I bought a set of five a few weeks back from eBay too, for *much* more but they were misdescribed and awful condition. Trouble is I loathe paying too much when I've seen sooo many tidy sets ruined on the banger tracks... Don't know what to do with them really, I was going to stick my spare set of 205/50/15 (from my Alfa 155) but expect to foul arm, and will read 8mph low at 70mph anyway.

Try RJ Spratley www.rjspratley.co.uk, I picked-up his flyer at NEC, £130+p&p each, exchange

Anyone selling a set of Jensen Alloys? Cash waiting.

Cheers for that.

I have had a look at the site and the Rostyle page.

GOOD GOD!!!!!

Bit of autosol and some black hammerite will do the trick! ???

Johnny,
Hello again.
Having re-furbished Rostyle wheels on my Cortina 1600E and latterly on my P6B I recommend polishing the chrome first with Solvol Autosol then using masking tape over the chrome and trimming this with a scapel to reveal the black bits (this follows the line so easily) and then spraying with a satin black spray.
Regards, john.

Probably worth using an etch primer on the chrome if you only want to do it once. Hammerite special metals primer works buit is brush only, flows quite well.

Thanks John.

Thanks BB.

I have spoken to a guy in NZ who is a member of the Toronto Area Rover Club. (Did it over the internet, couldn't afford the trip).

He said that MGB centres will fit and the Rover Club of Canada can supply replacement tranfers to cover the MG logo.

I have checked and they are only $10.00.

You know what my NEXT question is.......

:p

Johnny,
The badges for the wheel centres are available from Classic Reproductions - The last set I bought were £1.99 each - I think that they are a bit dearer now but but not like the £29.99 that you see on e-bay!
Regards, John.

John.

Thanks for all those details. I should have saved my afternoon off work and asked you in the first place!!!!

I'm planning on fitting 195's. IanP6man has stated that this is all you can go to on the P6 - safely. Seeing as what I do for a living and the fact that my 5 year old, Lauren, loves 'Dad's Rover' (and his Lunar Grey one) - I'm not taking chances.

Will the half an inch make a difference? Iv'e asked the wife and she refuses to make a comment!

:0 :0 :0 :0

P.S. When I bought my 1600E, the guy said he was selling it because it played havoc in the family?

............his two daughters loved the car and always wanted to go in it. Then they hit their teens - wouldn't be seen dead in it!!

Some very careful parenting needed here I think!

Just one more point.

I have since learnt that the wheels are DEFINATELY from a P5. The centre hole is larger on a 5, although as you quite rightly say John, are 5.5 inch on our cars.

I have contacted MGB Hive and the MGB centres are 10mm too small to fit P5 wheels.

I have spoken to a guy who breaks P5's and he is going to supply me with four for about £20 - sounds good!

Exhausted? I spent less time researching a gas conversion on the old P6 than I have with these bl**dy wheels!!!

Thanks to all - once again!

Johnny. ???

I've just discovered that the Denovo setup used 205/65 tyres, so it seems that 205 section tyres will fit under the wheelarches. An original 185/80/14 tyre and wheel combination has a rolling radius of 325.8 mm without the weight of the car. A 205/75/14 tyre and wheel have a rolling radius of 331.5 mm, which is +1.75% of the original specification and would have a small effect on speedometer accuracy. I don't know if you can fit a 205 section tyre on a 5" or 5.5" wide wheel rim. Has anybody done this?

John Larkin

John.

Cant answer your question about the 205's. But for what it's worth, i have visited COSTCO in Haydock tonight. I have sat a 185/80/14 against quite a few tyres. It turns out that the 195/50/15 is the nearest match.

That is the tyre I will be fitting to mine. £44 each fitted and balanced - MICHELIN PILOTS!

Johnny.

Oh bum, I had a nearly new set of 195/50 r15s on a set of golf alloys (the alloys were really poor, so I thought I would sell the tyres with them) I only got bloody £25 for four on ebay now I have some rostyles and no tyres! should have kept them.
