When they go wrong....

You were spot on in your diagnosis, I was thrown a bit by the comp test results I must say but when all is said and done at the original point in time I didn't have the funds or other transport available to pull it off the road and tear it down to have a look. It is testament to how strong these little 4 pots are though, that's been running with a duff valve for yonks now. The date of the last topic mentioned was july last year and this problem had been noticed by me about a year before that so full marks to the little Rover, she did well :D

All going back together now with new head etc, I'm now at the point where shims are going to be required. Whilst reading the manual I noticed it says that there should be two separate shims used but my one only seems to have one in each bucket, is this normal?

There are shims out there which take up the entire amount of shimming that is required. My shim collection goes up to 419 thou. Did you install new valves, or did you just do a valve regrind. If you did a valve regrind then the tops of the valves will have moved closer to the cam. You may find that when you put everything back together that the top of the tappet touches the back of the cam. This is bad as you will have to get some thinner shims just to get a clearance to get a reference point to get the shimming right. Have you measured each shim prior to installing on the valve?
