Where are all the BW35 boxes?

I'm getting a little impatient. I've made lots of enquiries, searched E-bay, been on to other sites but I cannot locate a replacement box for my motor.

I'm now becoming resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to repair the one that's in there (although I'll have to take it out first, naturally!)

I believe that the problem is with the reverse band/drum.

Does anybody have any experience with these things namely availability/cost of parts, ease of working etc.

If I leave it too long, I'll lose momentum and therefore interest.

Have you also thought about converting to manual gearbox. The 5 speed SD1 boxes are coming up for sale fairly regularly on ebay at the moment. As far as fixing the auto box goes I don't think it's normally something that can be done at home as you need various bits of specialist test equipment to set them up properly. Maybe possible to do if your just changing the reverse gear band though as you may be able to leave the forward gear bands undisturbed. Expect by the time you've managed to get hold of the parts you may as well had it rebuilt by a specialist anyway. Your probably looking at £300-£400 for a rebuild.

Have patience though I'm sure you'll get hold of a box soon. There will be plenty out there.

BW 35 boxes are essentially the same, I have a volvo one in my P6, the bell housing and tailshaft housings swap easily enough. Parts for a soft overhaul will cost about £150 - 200. Where abouts are you? I'm in York and if you remove the box and you are near enough I don't mind having a look to see whats up.

I'm in South Hertfordshire, only four miles north of the M25.

Although York is a lovely place, I'd be reticent to travel that far!

Before I persue the BW35 thing, exactly how difficult is it to convert to a manual box. Of course, a clutch would be useful as well!

Hello Squashed Nose

Am I right in thinking that the auto box from early Jag XJ sixes
are the same as the Rover. I know me and my mate put a box
into his brothers Jag and that came from a P6V8. Maybe another option.

GOT ONE!!

I bought a copy of Practical Classics yesterday (should have done it weeks ago) and rang a few numbers from the ads. I was given another couple of numbers and bingo.

I'm picking it up on Saturday. The geezer assures me that it's fully functioning. It's a commercial sale so at least I'll have some comeback if it's no good.

Thanks for all your input geezers.

By the way (edit) I had already looked at 'the other site' but I absolutely hate the layout. I don't like having to scroll across three miles to find the end of the thread.

Does £100 seem reasonable to you lot? It did to me, despite the fact that it represents 40% of the cost of the car!

Sounds alright if it works! Like you say you've got sale of goods act on your side if it's kaput. I'd try and get some kind a written reciept confirming it's a working unit. A third of the price of the car on spares, your not trying hard enough until you've spent at least 10 times the purchase price!
