my mother has decided she needs a two seater classic for the summer.

but isnt really sure what she wants. she wants something ropey that will be good fun for the summer.

her budget is only £2k

she has been looking at a spitfire MKiv

what else should we be look at?

I think an early Mazda MX5 like Damien bought would be pretty close! At £2k my instinct is that anything classic British is going to be too ropey! Or perhaps an Escort convertible or similar?

It was us with the mx5 recently Chris.
I've been driving it daily since we got it, and I feel you get a lot of car for your money.
We paid £700 for a taxed/tested, 1 lady owned, garaged since imported, fully serviced Eunos V Spec

Not a TWO seater, but I can vouch for a mk4 Escort cab fun and very practical and will only go up in value based on history very iconic 80's convertable with a strong following if you can find a good one nows the time to buy. I have had Widget for just over a year and have been offered over 3 times what I paid for it twice already :D

if i so much as mentioned an XR3i convertible to my mum she;d be scouting the internet trying to find out how to abort her 29 year old son.....

my instinct would be to go for the simplest machine possible if not spending a lot of money, so thats probably a midget?

One Q although possibly delicate, :oops: like age, that has to be asked is;
What size is mum???
tall short average thin big normal!
Will she fit?
What floats her boat so to speak?
Also too ropey and you will be fixing it more than driving it!
A good MG Midget,Spitfire or possibly a MGB should be gettable for your £2k!
Does it have to be tax exempt?

If it was my money, I would be tempted to go down the Midget route. Should be able to get one T&T'd for summer for about £2k? Better hurry though, just a few days of hot sunny weather and prices could double :) .

Would agree a Spitfire has to be a contender:

:D Or maybe this wick'd pimp'd Cavalier

TR7 maybe?

cheers for the advice folks, we are going to look round a Triumph specialist tomorrow, they have a few spitfires and tr7s in (tr8 conversion in the pipeline......). will also be looking at MG Midgets

mum is pretty average build, under 6 foot tall, i think she wants something british, and its got to be classic, so no future classics (although im tempted by that lovely cavalier.... not)

Honda S2000 would be my pick, highly reliable and a good balance of show and go.

You won't get much of a British one for 2000 pounds. BEWARE OF RUST.
I've got a Mk4 Spitfire which is not rusty but would cost a lot more than 2 grand if it were in England.
I'd also suggest an MX5, very little maintenance required :p
Tony.

I remember test driving the Fiat Barchetta back in 1997 or so. Very entertaning car to drive, and quite simple. These are cheap at the moment, and with some searching it should be possible to find a good one. At the same time I also tried the MGF, which i also liked a lot.

regards, Barten
