Which Coil ?

Need some advice please ! Have fitted Simonbbc electronic ignition and at the moment taken the feed from the power wash pump for it. I am just working through the main parts of ignition system and now would like to upgrade the coil ? What/who do people reccomend for uprated/good coil and how is all this affected by the ballast issue( which i don't fully understand) i have to say !! thanks in advance cheers Tam.

Before you change the coil Tam, you need to know exactly what type of coil your new electronic ignition system can run with. What details are provided?

Ron.

Well i have no details as the kit was new but second hand, it is the standard kit from simonbbc around £30 to replace the points, condensor and rotor arm, fitted and working fine as far as i can tell. My mechanic seems to think i should now fit a 12v coil but having read a little i believe this may be awkward due to ballast wire!. Is it easy to bypass this , just wondered if others had replaced coil after fitting the accuspark or simonbbc kit wich seem fairly similar if not identical! cheers Tam.

If you have taken your supply from the washer bottle feed then you have already bypassed the ballast wire.

Ah ok that sounds reasonable , so it shouldn't affect choice of coil ?. Actually looking at simonbbc website they offer a package with a sports coil so should maybe ask them also ! Just looking to get the strongest spark i can without going mad to go with the electric ignition and SD1 heads and spark plugs! Not that i have much of a clue! about such things cheers Tam.

Hi Tam .
Got Simonbbc ignition on mine . He will supply you with a "standard" 12v coil for around 15 quid . I had a rare problem with a faulty new one , he replaced it no problems . if you phone him he will do everything he can to help you , nice guy . he also sells an uprated coil not much more money . Mine is fed off the washer bottle . Over the winter i;d like to bypass the ballast wire , but no problems using the washer feed . Hope this helps .

Except that it's then sharing a fuse, so if it blows, the car stops. Mine's the same (running off the heater fan supply) and always been fine, but someone pointed out this potential problem on the forum a while back.

Yeah your right , i read that too . Hence i'm going to sort it properly during the winter . For now i want to enjoy using it . The original ballast feed is still there in the original place but well taped up . If the washer feed fails i can feed the coil with this as it will run on the ballast feed as a get you home measure .

I've got a Maplins £9.99 kit fitted which uses the points but only passes a low current through them
That takes a 12volt supply from the washer pump but the supply to the coil is unchanged as this unit only acts as a switching device in the wire that formerly went to the points
Does this sound feasible ?

Yep that was me.

Also folks, don't confuse the supply for the coil with the supply for the electronic ignition module, they are not necessarily the same. I have the original supply going to my coil but have taken the supply for the pertronix ignitor off the washer bottle supply.
