Whining While Driving (Not the Pom Inside)

Hi

I have a series 1 2000TC 1970 with 4 speed gearbox. After running for about 5/10 minutes I hear a high pitched whine which I think is coming from the gearbox area. It disappears when accelerating but manifests itself when coasting/decelerating/idling. While coasting I can change the pitch by slight depression/release of the accelerator without a change in revs. One suggestion is that it is coming from a bearing in the box and might be cured by replacing the gearbox oil with a high quality gearbox treatment? Does anyone have any other ideas/suggestions before pursue this course of action? Thks.

It's definitely the pom inside. No doubt about it and it will still be whining after you have stopped the engine...

Rover noises can be hard to localise the car structure amplifies and transmits some noises to some very odd places. However based on what you wrote I would put money on a bearing being on the way out.

If it is a geabox bearing then fancy treatments might prolong the life a bit, but you'll never cure the problem without an overhaul. The bearing is going to let go sooner or later and that's not a good place to be. Best to fix it properly as sson as you can rather than waiting until you have to fix it because the internals, the oil and and most of the casing are spread all over the road

I'd drain and change the oil as a first step, just to see what comes out. Look for any shiny metallic particles. Then refill with engine oil (20/50) The front and rear mainshaft bearings do get noisy, laygear bearings less so. If changing the oil makes no difference then taking the box out and dismantling it is the only way to find out for sure. Rear manshaft bearings are NLA, but other bearings can be fitted in the place of the original with some machine work.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try changing the oil at the weekend and see if it makes any difference.

The 5 speed option looks fantastic but a bit outside my budget right now (the whole car only cost $900). Will put it on my Christmas list!

Have not got around to changing oil due to other "issues" (see posts on electrics & radiator) but I have just read in Practical Classics October 2001 "Super Service Guide Rover P6" that:- "Wear in the selector rod bushes can also cause a "sizzling" sound fom the lever". This could be my problem, as the sound is getting louder and "sizzling" isn't a bad description. Have looked in Ye Olde Workshop Manual but in the "gearbox selectors and gear change lever" diagram G955 I can't see anything called a selector rod bush. Does anybody know what the PC article is referring to?

I would think that is more likely referring to the bushes on the selector rod on the Series 2 models with the remote housing.

The gearlevers themselves can "buzz" but you should be able to stop that temporarily by holding/moving the lever.

Possibly referring to the bushes at the end of the selector fork.

These will wear out and start to rattle and buzz if you are in the habit of resting your hand on the gearstick whilst driving.

5232943 on the V8 - dont know the part number on the 2000.
