whirring noise (maybe the prototype turbine lol)

hi there, could someone tell me is it normal or not,or maybe the cause of why my 3500 auto box whirrs at times loudly.i mightnt notice at times cuase its been doing it for the last yr,since i got it,so maybe used to the noise.its a whirr, not a whine and is noticable at all times, at least when stationary.i thought it might be a pump worn? thanks for any advice, karl

I have not experienced this myself, but while discussing transmissions with another Rover owner, he talked about a whirring noise that his was making. Turned out to be the oil pump within the transmission. The filter was nearly completely blocked and fluid flow through the pump was significantly reduced.

As I say, no first hand experience, just repeating what I was told.

You really need to have the transmission looked at Karl. If you're out one day and it fails altogether, getting a tow is going to be expensive. Cheaper to have it serviced/rebuilt now rather than wait and have additional costs too..

Always difficult with noises that you can't actually listen to, but I'd take the easy option first and have a look at the filter, which will also allow you to see any other clues that may be in the sump when you remove it. Pumps can be noisy, but I've not found it to be a common problem, another suspect could be the converter. Change the filter and set the band adjustments and then see what you've got. As you didn't mention it I'll assume that the fluid looks normal and the level is correctly set.

i think you might be right guys, the fluid level is correct, but gritty fine black stuff in the oil when drained some, didnt notice any metal filings, but then i did not know to look for them as i removed the plug. maybe my filter is blocked too? ive brought me a second hand box, unseen, but only cost me a 50 note so ,no big loss if shot.ive yet to pick it up.

oh dear, thanks, might be putting in the box i bought soon lol. altho reverse doesnt egage occasionally, i hope it holds for a little longer

Hello Karl,

The box that you recently purchased, has it been rebuilt?

I would not assume it is going to be any better than what you already have. If it were me I would have at least one of them completely rebuilt, then you have a known known as opposed to a known unknown.

Ron.
