Why I don't like other people working on my car.

At Brown Rover's last WOF inspection, the man in the blue overalls alerted me to a non-functioning left park light. That's a failed WOF, so I said "Bugger, should have double-checked them before coming in." "No worries, guv!" said the man in the blue overalls. "I'll sort it right now if you want. It'll cost you three bucks for the bulb."

Fast forward five months. Brown Rover doesn't often go out at night, but on Saturday I had occasion to venture forth in the darkness by Rover. What's that I see? Or rather, what's that I don't see? Illumination of the left sticky-uppy tell-tale doodad. Another blown bulb? Well, I'd better sort that. WOF's due again next month.

So on Sunday I went to change the bulb. The bulb was just fine. Perfect working order. However it was too small, rattling around in the socket and making only intermittent contact with its surroundings. Gritted teeth. But wait! There's more! The three screws that hold the park light lens in? One was missing, one was bent, and one had had its head snapped off.

That's why I don't like other people working on my car. The worst three bucks I ever spent...

More than likely it was fine to start with and he'd just turned the switch to the 'Park lights' position too.

I can empathise with that one. I had my autobox rebuilt in 1994 by what appeared to be a troupe (if that is the collective, if not it sounds good) of slow-witted simians, masquerading as autobox specialists, in a premises in Laindon, Essex.

Tossers managed to dent the rear wing and overtighten the sump plug on the autobox so that it stripped the thread. The box changeups were thumpy and occurred at the wrong speeds. Bloody thing leaked gallons of ATF in the years after.

Luckily, Harvey's man at Grawal re-rebuilt it a couple of years ago for me; it has been a dream since.

Hadn't thought of that, Al, because I don't think I've ever used the "Park" position, but you're probably right on the nail.

Yep, the number of times I've been told after a wof "it's all good mate but your left hand park lights and number plate lights aren't working."

I had someone try to fail me because he said that the gearbox wouldn't go into reverse. Wouldn't accept instructions on how to lift the lever either..

Then when I got his boss out, he tried to say that the handbrake wasn't working well enough to stop the car at 50kph. No shit.

Stopped using local WoF garages then.
