Window Winder Issues

Hi all,
the drivers door window mechanisms on 2 of my cars are failing. I have to pull the glass up by hand in stages and then wind them. The mechanism also seems to have failed on my donor car unfortunately :( . What usually fails? Is the part common with the other 3 doors? I also have access to some S1 doors (on a '65 car), is the drivers door setup the same?

Hi Dave,

From what you have described, the spring within the window regulator is a very possible cause. Regulator is the term used by the Workshop manual and the Parts book for winder mechanism. The regulator can also suffer moisture ingress which eventually leads to seizure.

All four regulators are distinct, being sided and specified for front or rear. Now I am not entirely sure as to whether the regulator can be removed without withdrawing the window frame. I shall post a separate thread on that very topic.

This was going back a while, sorted yet?
Unfortunately, over here I think the cause is more likely to be corrosion than failing regulators. Mine was similar until I replaced the door recently. The symptom is that the winder feels "springy" - instead of winding the glass up smoothly, it distorts the frame which has probably parted in one or more places. Pulling up the glass by hand while winding prevents the distortion and enables the window to close.
This sort of mess, and worse, is all too common:

I have stripped out all the window mechanisms and hardware while restoring the doors in my TC. The pivot pin on all my front vent windows has rusted and broken at the place where they pass through the seal.
I notice from your pictures a different set up for those pins than I see on mine. Could this be a series 2 improvement?
I am still looking for a replacement/ solution to this problem.
 
The photos are certainly of a Series 2 car. But I'm not familiar with the Series 1 setup so don't know how it differs. Anyone else?

Incidentally, of the bits that went into that refurbishment, one of the pivot pins was very rusty but the other was fine. I was pleased to find that both doors had rusted rather differently leaving a useable selection of good parts.
