Windows 7 Activation.

Has anybody on here had a (any) problem(s) with activating windows 7 using the product key?

I tried to activate by typing in the product key, but it kept saying it couldn't be activated on the computer... even though the OS DVD box was sealed, had the Microsoft COA label, and the product key label (with both labels, after double-checking, seeming to be genuine)

I checked the product key twice, still to no avail.

But this is the strange thing... when I tried to activate using the phone (i.e. the automated telephone method) to type in the installation ID, then getting 7 sets of 6 digit numbers, it bleeding activated properly! :?

How come it wouldn't activate using the product key, but would using the 7 in quantity 6 digit-numbers? Is there some quirk/fault with Win7 product keys and/or activation?

I was connected to the internet, and the connection was working at the time, for the record/in case someone asks

I had a similar issue and the story I got was that the browser wasn't configured yet, so it couldn't connect.
Having just loaded the OS, how do they expect the browser to configure itself????

Yes quite odd, I've had no problems, and have activated 20+ machines recently without trouble.

Unstable - you usually have 30 days to activate, so can setup the browser etc. and make sure everything works before activation.

You need to be connected to the internet for the PC registration to work - did you have that bit setup ?

Yes, definitely! That's the very first thing I checked.

I'm just wondering if there's a batch of (genuine I hasten to add!) win7 packs with "faulty" product keys?

to be fair i wouldnt know... i get an msdn subscription so i download dvds off the ms site...

I haven't had any Windows activation problems since I ditched it two years ago for Linux Mint. Best cure I ever found, and now I'm a smartypants Linux convert I'm going to preach from the treetops.

Its probably the future... I don't think any current mainstream os is particularly nice but if you can get by with the free option then that seems sensible to me!

Always one, isn't there? :p

Well done Warren for joining the dark side of OS's! :p
