Windscreen washer pump

Im about replacing the 12v pump unit that sits atop the washer reservoir.
Ive done all the checks ie cleaned lines from pump through to bonnet jets.
Pump rotates but no suction anymore. Im thinking 50yrs has taken its toll.
Has anyone successfully replaced the 12v motor/pump with a modern unit?

Ive done a little research and have come up with this alternative.
12v submersible pump measures 60mm length
Nicely hidden inside the reservoir delivering 2 litres/min and 6w consumption.
should work
sorry can't seem to upload a pic

Try checking the impeller after all those years it's probably gone hard, worn away or just broken up. replace it with an impeller from another cheapy pump.

I found a small 'in line' pump from a well known supplier, and hid it underneath the bottle, leaving the original on top. It lasted nearly three weeks. I complained to the supplier and they replaced it with one that lasted five weeks.

I found one on ebay that looked perfect, but it was £70+ so I tried rebuilding the old one, got it stripped down, cleaned up and put back together and it worked, for ten minutes :(. Then I bought the ebay one and it's now sorted, works every time, looks original, no more hassle.

If you aren't fussed about originality then the "lucas" branded cheapo works fine - had mine for 5 years.

Hi Colin - I have two pump units and both have intact and supple impellers.
Can the impellers be bought online somewhere?,coz it must be age that has stopped them picking up the fluid.

Can't beat a good "well at least I tried" story. I too tend to try everything before relenting and go the obvious route

I was thinking something like this , but maybe too much delivery at 10 litre/pm. It may blow the joints along the water delivery system.
I'll see if there is something less efficient

I had two bottles, and tops. Both impellers were shot and although I believe there is a Bentley spares company that supplies them decided that the cost to get one to OZ was not worth it. Bought a pump motor at local Repco store sprayed it the appropriate grey cut off an original motor and positioned the new one (by means of fishing line, don't ask) and glued it in place, Then needed a non return valve for the suction line.

All worked and still does.

I used the impeller from a NOS 28 volt Trico pump as fitted to some older Land Rovers. From my faffing about I found that Trico pumps of the era all use the same impeller even if the body is different, and the NOS pump I stripped yielded a perfect impeller. They come up now and the on ebay etc.

I removed the pump from the cap to clean and lubricate the motor and used nuts and bolts to fix it back on. The bolt heads were covered with a blob of solder and look very original. The rubber gasket is from left over rubber roofing and cut out using a circle cutter (compass with a blade) and the middle hole using a punch.
Guilty as charged regarding the rust around the nuts - they have now had a squirt of WD on them! The green gadget on the end of the feed pipe is a non return valve and I think a filter. No idea if it's original or even if it works but it is period Trico.

Thanks for all the feedback fellas. Im sure you have inspired others with washer units that make all the right noises but don't get the water delivery.
Always good to know there are great alternatives.

Think the pump was about $20.
If I were doing it now would use a Slate Grey plumbing and gutter silicone and get a nice even bead.
Did have thoughts of reaming out the original pump housing and using it as a cover, can't remember why I didn't but probably found it too challenging at the time.
