Hi all . Before the winter i want to remove the wings , one at a time and clean / under seal . How involved is wing removal ?

its an easy job to do at the front this is a bolt up by the bonnet 1 under neath were it does to the floor and 2 right behind the wings light but got to go behind it oh and unplug the wire while yr behind the light

oh and the back there is a bolt in the boot then 1 underneathe by the valance and there are 2 bolts next to the door but you can unlosing them and pull wing away

As gareth says it's not too difficult. On mine i had to remove the rivets at the bottom and recreate the bracket as it wasnt in fit state, but even that was easily done.

Thanks guys any pics of the location of bolts would help . No hurry , not thinking of doing it for a few weeks .

Locations are simple.

Rear wing, you have the 2 at the front of the wing visable when the door is open. Also if you pull back the boot trim you will see the rear top fixing. there is another like this from underneath (if it hasnt rusted off). also have the fixing which goes through the rear valance.

Front wing, you can either reach up inside the wing to behind the front lamps or removed the lamps and you will see the two bolts. There is a fixing at the hinge and sometimes if it hasn't rusted off a fixing under the wing holding it to the body. you have a fixing for the front valance which is 2 captive bolts on a plate on each side, just remove the nuts. at the door edge it is just held in position in a sort of nylon bush so when everything is undone just lift the wing forwards and away.

Have a look on the rover classics site and you will see the fixings, maybe worth replacing them for new. The nuts and bolts can be a bit tough to remove. I have sheared the ones at the bonnet hinge before. worth cleaning the thread out with a tap before putting them back.

worth either removing the bumpers or padding the ends as it is very easy to scratch your paint on them.

There is often, not always but often, a small nut and bolt holding the rear wing to the splash panel behind the rear wheel.

Hi guys thanks for all the info . I'll file it all away for when the time's right . I'm enjoying using it at the moment but would like to get it done before the winter . I'm pretty confident it's in good shape under the wings , just want to keep it that way . Will post pics of the work when i get to it .

I've had my wings on & off several times, and can pop a wing off in about 10 minutes now. One thing I did was to run a correct size tap through the mounting threads to clean them up before replacing the wing. I did this, and was able to spin the mounting bolts in almost all the way by hand, particularly handy for the front wing bolts just behind the indicator, which are a bit of a pain to get to. I also put copper grease on the threads too, so if I need to get the wings off again, there shouldn't be any problems getting the bolts out.
