Wiper delay

happy days

My delay on the wipers is finally working, but the maximum delay I get is about 2-3 seconds. Is that right ? If not and should be able to get longer, how ? Cheers Mick

Hi Mick,

The cylinder of foam in the top of the module combined with the variable control unit on the side of the steering column control the amount of delay delivered.

Did you fit a nice new piece of foam?

Ron.

Could the plastic pipe running from the steering binnacle variable control to the wiper have a small leak ?

I think that's a possibility, how much of a delay can you get? Will get some tube and put a temp in to check existing is ok or not

I am getting a maximum delay of 10 seconds Mick. I fitted the current piece of foam in 1990 so just quietly it is lasting quite well. What sort of foam are you using and how large was the piece?

Ron.

Arrrr, might have too many holes I suspect Mick, hence the short delay. A foam with a more dense construction would be better I suggest as it will take longer for the air to pass through thus increasing the delay time.

Ron.

I can't remember what foam I used on mine, but have the opposite problem - delay is a minimum of 15secs rising to a couple of minutes. I suspect I use a "closed cell" foam by mistake.

Had a look in the van and found some foam underlay from laminate flooring. Used a piece of that and got 5 sec max delay, so put another piece in as well , now 8 second max delay. Anyone know what the delay was when new

Between 3-20 secs I think is fine?

Appologies what I ment was you would not want more than a 20 sec delay so anywhere inbetween would be fine.

Do you know what, I as a plumber have loads of that in the shed and didn't even think of it doh. Does it work ok, what's yor max delay time. I'm quite happy at 7-8 seconds but if it's not right it will bug me.

The foam is not there to filter or bleed air into the vacuum chamber but acts merely as a spring to keep the one way valve closed just enough to leak a bit of air in, so you can use any foam you like as long as it's springy enough.

Car wash sponge is too soft, but pipe lagging might be just right as it's fairly stiff. Put a chunky bit in first and see what delay you get - then you can trim a bit off to fine tune the delay afterwards.
