Wiper motor grease

I'm in the process of giving my wiper motor and delay unit a service and was wondering what tyre of grease I should use. The workshop manual does specify the grease but I already have some LM grease that I use on wheel bearings. Would this be suitable?

Just out of interest, what does the WM specify?

I'd be happy enough using LM.

It mentions 'Ragosine Listate 225 Grease'. Whatever that is :?

Hi Harvey,

Two types of lubricant are specified, Shell Turbo 41 oil and Ragosine Listate grease.

When I rebuilt mine, I used Castrol EPL2.

Hi Ron,

It would appear that the Castrol EPL2 is very similar to my Castrol LM grease in that they're both Lithium based but the LM has a high melting point that makes it suitable for wheel bearings. Castrol does state that LM can also be used a general purpose grease as well. Googling EPL2 seems to only bring up Austrailian sites so it must be something specific to your neck of the woods Ron.

Hi Mike,

Castrol LM has a drop point (temp at which the grease changes from a semi solid into liquid) of 180 degrees C, EPL2 a touch higher at 185 degrees C. The LM grease has disappeared from shelves here in N.S.W, also the Australian Castrol website no longer lists it. I prefer EPL2 as it is an extreme pressure grease and doesn't dry out in the same way that LM does.

From a Triumph TR8 website
The manual specifies three different lubricants when rebuilding or reassembling the Windshield wiper motor: Shell 41 oil, Molydbnum Disulphide & Ragosine Listate Grease. Unfortunately nobody in the world sells or knows where to get Ragosine Listate Grease. It's a product of a very old British refinery called the Ragosine Oil Company Ltd, now ROCOL. Rocol greases are now called Saphire and they don't list one as being a direct replacement.

It was a Lithium based extreme pressure grease for multipurpose automotive use with a high-melting point and high water resistant characteristics - same as Castrol LM or Shell Retinax A. The reason it's no longer available is it contained lead. Lucas would likely have started using a general purpose lithium grease as a replacement.
