Wiper motor part no. wanted for S2 V8 auto

Hi.

My wiper motor has started to get lazy on 1st and delay speed. 2nd speed goes really well.
My question is - is this likely to be the motor, and if it is, has anyone got the Lucas part number for it?

Thanks

Glen.

Hi Glen,

I'm assuming you have a Lucas 16W? Like >these?<

You'll probably find it and the cable rack could do with a cleanup inside and re-lubing. I had the same problem a few years ago and this cured it.

If you've got a factory workshop manual, it's well covered in there, and not a big job. Bit messy though, that grease! :D

Cheers,

Hi Glen,

By the sound of it that is nothing unusual. If you wish you can remove from the car, release the lower cover that surrounds the motor and then go from there. When I first did this 15 odd years ago, the motor contained a quantity of water... mind you, it wasn't working at all at the time. The rotor can be withdrawn with the cover off, so give the surface where the three carbon brushes make contact a good clean with some very fine emery paper. The magnets within the cover will likely have bits of rusty metal sticking to them, so clean all these out and reassemble. Do note that it can be a bit of a fiddle refitting the rotor as the three carbon brushes being spring loaded will protrude preventing to some degree the rotor from going fully home. A very fine screwdriver or similar is most helpful in these occasions.

Clean and regrease the cable and refit.

Ron.

Thank you guys for your helpful information, once again the forum has come up trumps!!!
I'll strip the motor unit down at the weekend and have a clean & grease up. (Cable & wheel boxes already done 6 monthe ago).
Thanks again
Glen.

Good advice from Ron there, Glen.

Those brushes are a fiddle. In the end I held them back with small cable ties then snipped them off once the brushes were located.

Good Luck with it! :D

Hi all just adding to this post as i see we are talking wiper motors finally getting my p6 ready for MOT but the wipers only work on 2nd an don't park is this a wiper motor or do they have a relay
cheers
Richard

Hi Richard.

As far as i know, there is no relay for the self park. It may be an issue with the motor assembly, or with the wiper switch itself. It may be worth trying another wiper switch first to see if it makes any difference.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum so you will definately get all the info you require.

Glen.

All good i'll give that a bash. Can't wait to get her mot'd join my local club an get out there been a long time coming
cheers
Richard :D

Hi Hawkit

You really do need a wiring diagram to figure this out. It is mot definitely not straightforward. The dashboard switch has a complex set of outputs, there is a park switch in the wiper motor, and then there are several sets of contacts associated with the delay mechanism.

If you haven't got one, tell us the year and model of your car - it varies markedly according to year - and I'll scan one for you.

Chris

Totally stripped the thing down to its bare casing on Sunday. Cleaned everything up, refaced the motor rotor with some wet & dry (was glazed, burnt and greasy), cleaned the brushes, which were ok. Everything Regreased and reassembled. Wipers work a treat, even on the delay setting. Not a hard job and certainly worthwhile.
Thats a few quid saved!!

Glen. :p
