Wiper problems - Wipers only start on fast

I have a '74 3500S on which most of the time the wipers will only start on 2nd speed. Once they are going they will go back to speed 1 and intermittent (although int. sometimes throws a wobbly and packs up or does 2 at a time!).
I have replaced the switch and the delay governer but the fault persists. I would have thought the motor would either work or it wouldn't but it seems to be the last option. Does anyone have any ideas, I don't really want to replace the motor unnecessarily.
Cheers Richard

Wrighty.

Same here. I thought it was just me but there is someone else out there with the same problem!!!

Dont know the answer but my delay does'nt work either (just stays on all the time). Do you also have that problem?

John.

Run your wipers onn the intermittent setting and make sure that the rod sticking out of the underside of the delay governor is being pushed in by the wedge-shaped slider on the wiper motor. The rod should then come back out slowly. If it comes back out quickly then firstly check the one way valve --- it is a piece of sponge about a third of an inch in diameter located at the top of the conical body of the delay governor. It is kept in place by a flat piece of stainless steel. If it is perished (as mine was) it allows air back into the governor too fast. If the sponge is OK then detach the governor and open it up --- the rubber diaphragm may be split.

If your governor sponge is shot you can make a replacement by carefully cutting/shaping a piece from a washing-up sponge!, my wipers now work a treat!
Also worth cleaning the contacts in the governor whilst you're there! :D

Thanks for the info. I've replaced the sponge - it had already been replaced by the looks of it with a fairly dense piece -so I've used something less dense. The daiphragm is ok. The piston action is good and the wipers start on number 1 speed. Brilliant! :D
