WIPERS - Vacuum to delay controller

1974 P6B automatic, UK specification.

Can anyone tell me where the vacuum pipe for intermittent wiper control is supposed to be attached to the inlet manifold? I cannot find this information in the workshop manual.

John, the pipe from the vacuum unit on the wiper mechanism connects to back of the small white knob on the steering column switch housing. It works by limiting the rate at which air is let back into the vacuum unit after it has been depressed by the wiper arm mechanism. You can check whether the vacuum unit is working by pressing the plunger in whilst pressing a wetted finger over the pipe end to seal it. If it stays pushed in it is Ok , if it simply springs back out then the diaphram is probably gone.

Thanks Malcolm. I discovered a small sponge on the wiper vacuum device that acts as a one-way valve. It had turned into goo, and so was not holding vacuum. I replaced it with a spare sponge and now have intermittent wipe again!
