hey guys i have now replace the the dash on my series 1 to the s2 but having problems getting the ammeter and rev counter working from the ammeter there are 2 wires 1 brown and the other brown and white and the rev counter. the rev counter has 3 wires 1 is white and the other are white and slate and white and black. as fare as i can see from the haynes book the white and slate goes to the - of the coil and the white and black goes to the black lead of the distributor. but that lead is no longer there as i have now got the Lumenition and there are 3 wires black red and blue. the ammeter all i can see from the hanyes book is brown can go to the terminal post, relay for the starter motor and a few more things the brown and white can go to the alternator i am getting confuse with the ammeter with the wiring tryin to compare the s1 and s2 has any more got any better ideas with this thanks

Hmmm, looking at the wiring diagrams for both a series 1 and series 2 3500, with the former there is no designated item number for the ammeter shunt whereas with the latter there is. The ammeter is connected across the shunt which for the series 1 has 7 exiting wires, one of which (NW) runs to the alternator. The series 2 has 8 wires connected to the shunt, two of which (NW) run to the alternator.
(NW = brown and white)

Which alternator does your engine have Gareth?

We need Graeme (ghce) who is an electronics technician to cast his specialist eye over the situation and provide a solution. Are you there Graeme... :)

Ron.

the alternator on mine has been updated to the later 1 i dont have the controll box on mine any more so yea its the later 1

The black, red and blue wires lead from the optical eye to the power module. There is a brown wire that runs from the power module to the -ve terminal on the coil. The white and black lead from the tacho joins with the brown wire from the power module.

Ron.

right ok i will look for that later so just to get this right the black and white wire from the rev counter goes to the brown wire from the power module and the white and slate wire still goes to the - of the coil sorry to be a pain as i am not any good with wires well i am getting there i have got the rest working

Yes, and it's no problem Gareth..

Don't cut the brown wire, they all join at the -ve terminal, so the brown, the white and black and the white.

Ron.

right ok i will try that so hopfully i will get the rev counter working what about the ammeter which is the best way to wire that up

with the rev counter does it make sence just to wire the black and slate and black and white striaght to the - of the coil would that work

well i have tryed that white/slate to - coil and and the black/white to the - coil and white to the rest of them white wires behind the dash and nothings working if i earth the white/black to the body the rev counter goes up but the engine cuts out. any ideas

If you look at the wiring diagram for the series 1 and series 2 cars, you can see that they are quite different in terms of components used and their relevent connections. The trouble though lies in the fact that your Rover Gareth is a series 1 trying to be a series 2. I don't mean that to sound harsh, but when you start changing bits here and bits there, it is difficult without actually looking at the car to see what is what.

As an example, the series 1 tacho makes no connection with the -ve terminal on the coil, but the series 2 tacho does.

Do you know anyone else on the forum who has a series 1 with series 2 instruments?

Ron.

yea i can see yr point there about changing it the only reason i change the dash as i wanted the other bits and that the series 1 dash dont have and thought it makes more sence to put the dash in. i dont know if any 1 on here as done this job that could help me out think might be best to just to keep playing with it. i did notice on some of them had 2 white wires and a white and yellow unless i can try and work out those wires to mine and see what happenes

I wish I had the magic answer for you Gareth. It is really excellent when you try and try and then it works,..such a great feeling of achievement.

Ron.

yea thats true well i got all the rest working even the oil pressure gauge all to do is the rev counter and the ammeter just got to try and get that working
