Won't start

Hi , buy a strobe if you don't already own one , ( around 20 quid ) . Mark everything up and take a reading of how it's timed up now as it's running good . then you always have a reference point to return to , but can tweak a bit !

Mine is draper , type it into ebay , loads come up . Might not be the professional choice but it'll spend most of it.s time lost in the garage some place any way . It will do the job !

Mick, don't forget the mirror ball and dry ice machine to go with the strobe.

Or maybe we're on different strobes

John.

No John now we are showing our age. Are their any Discotechs left or did they all go in the 70's
I obviously was too young to ever go in one :D

Mick, glad to hear the car's sorted and running again. If you're owt like me I'd be tempted to leave as Is, 'cos usually when i touch owt mechanical it all goes to pot! ..I've got a few knocks on my suspension need looking at but I dare'nt!

Know what you mean

I found a bit of rust under the front wing so went to fix it and had the car back on the road in a mere 20 months!

That's it Mr Q. Not risking it, your escapades are enough to put me off, going to mark it up as it is, leave well alone until something changes. Also Will that's why my music is always loud, can't hear any moans or groans or bumps so nothing to investigate and hence mess up :D

You don't have to get carried away Mick, unless you are me that is

So you have fitted your new, under bonnet musical device to cover any noises? What sort of noises are you expecting

Richard

Not expecting any. But when they come as they surely will, I wont care because i wont hear them. Happy Days

I have a timing light on the way, but when I remove the dizzy cap their is a small groove/scratch on it, I presume it's a reference to the dizzy's position. What do you line this up with, providing of course I'm right and it's not just a mark from a screwdriver or something.

Hi Mick,

With the distributor already in situ, you don't have to align it with anything. The mark on your cap I suspect is nothing more than that. Loosen the retention bolt sufficent to move the distributor but not to the point where it springs back once you let go. Place your head in a suitable position to minimise the possiblity of parallax error and turn the distributor clockwise to advance. You can follow the manual and set it to 6 degrees BTDC although if your engine is a 10.5 : 1, then TDC is what it will say, both at 600rpm.

Turning the distributor clockwise will retard the timing.

Doesn't Happy days just need to connect up his timing light and see where the pointer on the timing cover coincides with the markings on the crank pulley , so he can reset it to the same if he ever needs to. I understood it was going fine the way it was set up

Exactly Dave. As someone who has a healthy scepticism as to the accuracy of the timing marks, plus knowledge that modern petrols are likely to dictate non factory settings to get the best result, I'd want simply to have a datum for your current good outcome. If you want to have a fiddle from there on, fine. But you then have a known good result to come back to. I also recommend the Dave3066 method of measuring performance on a known stretch of road - that's the closest you can get to a rolling road set up without all the kit!

Chris

That was the plan, to use the light and put a new mark on the crank pulley, if it ever plays up again i have a point to go back too. The set up as it is is very very good, will leave alone until I have too

Ron your allowed that, one every couple of years is ok,Had plenty of really good advice so I forgive you
