Can any out there help me as we are recomissioning our 3500s,its battery was a flat so my son Paul put in a replacement,we only noticed something was wrong when smoke came out of the alternator, panic ensued and I got the leads off the terminals. now there is no power to anything except horn and interior light ,what have we done!!! is there an inline fuse anywhere thats blown or is the wireing completley blown. please send me your advise please. bill

Hello Bill,

Sorry to hear what happened. Having fitted the battery in backwards the alternator (an 18ACR?) is likely to have had any number of diodes along with the voltage regulator destroyed. Damage to the armature is also possible, so an auto electrician will be the best place to start.

Have you checked all the fuses within the fuse box?

There is no inline fuse between the alternator and the battery, but there are numerous fuses for the lights, wipers etc.

Ron.

A replacement alternator sounds like a definite requirement - use it as an opportunity to go for a higher capacity & smaller pully wheel by buying a better spec, If anything else was switched on e.g. Radio then that could be goosed as well, if not then you may be in luck. Have you electronic ignition ?

So I would personally put a new alternator on and see how it goes.

Thanks for the replies guys, I took your advice, and got an auto electrician in, he found that the problem was that there was an amp regulator? blown he bypassed this and everything seems to work, apart from alternator of course,he's taken it away and reckons he can repair it for £20 so hopefully ready for mot on monday. once again thanks for your help, Bill

Does he mean the shunt that works the ammeter ?
You've had a lucky escape - don't do the same on a modern car stuffed with ECU's
