I'd say the dwell meter and timing light are the most important, the rest you can do without. That dwell meter also has a continuity tester, (amongst other things) which is something I never really bothered about, until I got one.... Now I use it lots...

thanks Harvey is it worth spending the extra 10 quid and getting one with the "advance setting" on it. trouble is I haven't used this stuff for 20 years and then it was just connecting it up to the battery and ht lead for the mechanic. the other thing that struck me is are the leads long enough to reach the boot where the battery is.... or can I run it off a poss and neg under the bonnet

For Rover use the advance setting probably isn't worth the extra, I've never had problems seeing the marks. You can take the power supply from an underbonnet source.

If you have an engine with a pointer and just a TDC mark on the pulley, and you want to set timing to say, 6BTDC, then you set the gun to 6, and time up to the TDC mark and the gun does the rest.

I'd get the timing light like Harvey says and possibly 2 of the colortune plugs, 1 per side just to simplify things.

Yes because then you only need TDC marked and not any number of other, possibly confusing points. Also if you have the 10.5 engine you might want to experiment with different timing anyway.

You run it of the alternator or fuse box and any ground point. No need to reach the battery.

If you get confused by the marks on the P6 (both 4 pot & V8) then there really isn't much hope, and should that be the case, then you'll get confused using the advance function on the light.

I guess it's just habit with the P6, I find it easier to hit the centre spot-on than some point on the scale.

I use mine on other cars too. These I need to mark myself otherwise as they only have TDC or have poorly marked scales, for an extra tenner it can save you a lot of hassle. It's also handy to take out a degree or two on those with pre-marked notchs rather than a true advance/retard scale for running unleaded instead of the intended 4star.

thanks all for ur advice. I ended up with the dwell meter and advanced timing light as the didn't have the normal one in stock and were unsure how long it would be. (been there b4 with this store they will only give a credit note for refunds). decided to hold off on the colourtune as I found it cheaper else where and it came with the adaptors as well.
once again many thanks to u all
