Yet another heater question... (the fan)

...Sorry, I know the heater box has been done to death  but I can't seem to find any information in previous posts about new or recon heater motors.

Can someone point in the right direction if they remember a post please?

I'd like to replace the motor in my box, but can't seem to find any remanufactured or recon units on t'internet. Are all Smiths motors the same??

Ta! If they're too expensive, I'll probably go down the refurb route, but am loathe to do this incase it gives up the ghost after I put it back in the car and stick an engine in front of it!! :(

I do remember reading a post or someone mentioned they have put a more powerful motor in their heater with a little bit of fettling. Taken from a more modern car. Might be wrong , was it Demetris ?

I think they use motors from Minis to update Mk2 Jags

Is that from the BMW Minis? (BMC ventilation wasn't up to much back in the day if my Minor's anything to go by!!).
I quite fancy this idea of an upgrade... There's certainly enough space in the box to fit something else, just a case of making sure the blade assembly fits the new spindle and then drill a few new holes in the mounting plate. Food for thought, certainly! Chip in any ideas for donor moderns!!

ISTR someone on here saying they had fitted a fan assembly from a Metro, but as with a lot of things, it's quite possible that I dreamt that......

No, it was no dream Harvey! It was Demetris. I've just found the post now (one that, weirdly, I started and have absolutely no memory of!!)

I might look into that. But as Metros are now 15 years old at the least, I'm keeping my options open. I'm currently looking at the Bosch units from a 75/ZT. The blade direction is the same as the P6, it's a name you can trust, and it's bound to be more powerful than a Smiths or Austin-Rover unit! I might ping off a few emails to ebay sellers asking for dimensions. It must be possible...!

Thanks guys! :D

Indeed that was me, and it was the second or third time i have already mentioned it.
I was led there, by the mounting compatibility of the motor itself, and the size of the impeller. It is the biggest one that will fit with minor modifications. Remember that you really need a bigger impeler to push more air. Just a more powerful motor will result in more noise, but not necessarily in more output.
The moderns have nice big impellers, but they don't seem to be able to fit into a P6 heater box without serious modifications.
Also, i have yet to find a non-destruction method for the removal of the impeller in a Smiths heater motor.
I have never had any reliability problems with Smiths heater motors. Well, once in 20 years, they may need some lubrication to their bearings.
