No such thing as silly questions here coop. We've all had to learn and ask those questions at some stage.

The nuts hold the battery clamping frame, and the knobs hold the battery cover, on any car with a boot mounted battery. The hooks on the bottom fit under two brackets welded to the base unit.

Oh, so that's what they look like. I knew there was something meant to be there, but I don't have any of them

if it will help and its allowed I can take messurements of the thread and length etc tomorrow. obviously u would need to get the plastic tops from somewhere but the rest would be easy to make with just a bit of threaded bar and a vice.

That's a long standing mystery solved - thank you :)

I have loads of these in my stash but I always isolate the battery when leaving my cars unattended even for a few moments so I shan't be installing them because I am always in and out of the boot every time I use the car.

They are there to secure the battery in position in the event of an accident, especially a roll over!!
You can still isolate the battery power when leaving the car via a hidden switch!
You only need to take it off,if you take the battery out,and it only takes a minute to fit or remove!
Another thing the MOT man should be making sure is fitted!
