    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

Many thanks "ghce" for the thought. I did try turning the cog while holding the shaft with a pair of grips. There is no way that it is able to move. It's just as if it's made in one piece. Thanks also to "eight of them". Just a slight alteration to your recap. The speedo cable to my surprise was...

    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

So today out came the driven gear which is in fact plastic. The photo shows that its diameter is 23mm and there is no sign of damage. Obviously, I don't know the as new diameter but the drive with a screwdriver inserted in the square turned freely as it was eased back into position and stopped...

    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

At last, the vehicle has now been checked over and the flange is tight. Another road test reveals that the speedo cable behind the fascia only turns momentarily on starting off and then stops turning completely. I have removed and checked the new angle drive at the gearbox and this functions...

    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

Many thanks to each of you for such helpful information provided so quickly. I will call upon my local Classic friendly garage next week to put the P6 on the hoist and investigate the matter further. I'll report back with the findings.

    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

Hi Harvey. Thanks for your response. I have taken everything apart and checked for faults and reassembled, as you do when desperation sets in! By "rear flange bolt" , do you mean the bolt holding the part that the gearbox rightangle fits into?

    Speedo problem. 1972 P6B Auto

Driving off recently, I heard a tick, tick, tick which developed into a clack, clack clack. A glance at the speedo revealed no reading. Back home I removed the fascia binnacle and withdrew the inner speedo cable expecting to find a break. It was intact! I replaced it and placed a 1" square of...

Seats in Black Leather for sale

I have matching driver and passenger seats from a 1972 P6B. The leather is in good condition being quite supple and without tears, splits or worn patches, except for the driver's seat where the seat belt has caused wear over the years(see photo). Please also see photo for two small nicks in the...

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

I promised to let you know the outcome regarding my clutch problem. Rather than aggravate an old back problem my friendly local garage were entrusted to replace the clutch. The linings were wafer thin and the rivets were bright and shiny! Flywheel was ok. It is a wonder how any drive was...

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

Harvey, Chris and Dave. A big thankyou to each of you for your time and trouble in helping me. I will post the outcome in due course. Do any of you have any last minute tips on taking the box out? I have the use of a Clarke hoist,a very substantial bit of kit which has been used to take an xk...

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

Hello Harvey. I fear that you are right and it is the clutch itself. One last thought though. When the car is already under way and doing say 30mph would the extra revs not be transmitted through the clutch more easily than trying to start off in 4th against the handbrake.

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

Hi Chris. Thanks for your input. I am new to P6s having had only this one and since last November at that. Can you give me more info on the release bearing which I would have replaced as a matter of routine while the box is out.

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

The engine revs are most definitely rising; it is not a tacho malfunction. If I keep my foot down then the revs keep rising and rising with no corresponding increase in road speed. I do, in fact, lose speed and I have to back off for fear of over-revving. Turning to the suggestion by DaveHerns...

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

I have just given it a try, twice. The engine stalls in 4th at both 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Not a hint of any slipping.

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

Thanks harveyp6 for your prompt response to my question. I would like to raise one query with you. Assuming that I have a problem with the pressure plate, then why does it only occur on the move? Surely starting from rest would give rise to clutch slip and a hill start would also be almost...

    Slipping Clutch 1973 2000TC

Can anyone help with my very baffling problem. Before I replaced the very leaky slave cylinder with a brand new one the clutch performed faultlessly. Now it has the replacement, adjusted in accordance with the w/s manual, the take off from standstill is perfect. A hill start presents no...

    Door Mirrors

I have recently joined the world of P6 Rovers having purchased a 1973 model a fortnight ago. I still retain my P4 100 model 1959 vintage and a Jag xjs 5.3 litre 1986. My new car has no external mirrors and I would like to fit a matching pair of door mirrors but I am unsure of the correct style...
