1960s Sheffield P6s

Very nice Phil! I still have 60s on my traction card, but haven't driven one since I left EWS and moved to Freightliner. Lovely engines.... they'd pull anything all day long.

Nidge

Yes Nidge, the last British heavyweight!

My 12 year old son Tom took the picture. All he wants to do is drive for Freightliner, especially with the 70s coming out. Have you been able to compare 60s to 70s? Unfortunately, I don't think you'll get to drive 70012 now!

This photo is on my hard drive labelled 'Carnforth, 9th June 1968'.

Carnforth1968.jpg

Found on flickr, loose_grip_99 is the photographer.

"Carnforth Lancashire 9th June 1968. British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0 92091 has been withdrawn & dumped in the sidings north of the shed. The photo was taken from the cab of 9F 92118 also withdrawn. This was the engine I rode on from Heaton Mersey to Newton Heath in May but unfortunately the only journey it made after this was to the scrapyard.

Carnforth shed building is in the distance with a clutch of still in-service LMS Black 5s in front & the coaling tower beyond.

A then two-year old Rover 2000 is parked between the two 9Fs, itself probably also long gone to the scrapyard."

He's probably right - it's not shown on DVLA.

He can do my 3am turn all this week if he likes...

I've had a quick look in the cab of a 70 but alas am not trained on them yet. We were supposed to have them straight away for our heaviest stone trains out of Bardon and Cliffe Hill Quarries, but somebody higher up the food chain changed their mind for some reason. I've passed a few at night in the Birmingham area and they do sound nice, a cross between a 56 and a 60 I'd say. There have been a lot of teething troubles with them and from a fitters point of view they're not that easy to work on but they're very powerful.

I heard about 70012 yesterday....oops, I'm glad it wasn't me!

Nidge

The hotel on the left of the photo with the cars parked in front is still there. It's a Holiday Inn, unsurprisingly called the " Victoria "

I do like nice, quirky places to live. We visited Braughing station on a cycle ride along the defunct Buntingford branch many years ago. A friend of one of our group lived there & let us look around. The only thing missing was the railway itself & IIRC, the signalbox too. Everything else was intact. Platforms, station buildings & a huge shed which would be paradise to we owners of a modest collection of classic cars.

A train ride along the line before closure: http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/2457
