2200SC Servo Problem

Just picked up my latest addition, a 1974 2200SC Automatic. It's got a few problems, only to be expected but the brakes are a real concern at the moment. The pedal is very hard but it does eventually stop the car. Doing the servo test, pressing the brake whilst starting the engine, the pedal drops slightly as it should but then pushes up to become quite firm. According to the history most of the brake system has been replaced, a new servo has been fitted, calipers etc at the rear, new pads etc. It does brake evenly and holds on the foot. Any clues as to where to start checking rather than just swapping parts, all the pipework looks OK, vacuum hose looks new, with new clips etc.

Hello Ron,

It sounds as if the booster (servo) is the problem. Was it brand new or reconditioned? Does the pedal push back at you?

Ron.

JUst been going through the history and cannot find a receipt for the servo. It looks very clean and i'd assumed it had been replaced alonfg with the rear calipers etc but think i'm going to work on the basis that it's not new. In answer to Ron's comment, yes the pedal goes down on startup of the engine but then pushes back. Do you think a refurb of the servo is called for?

Hello Ron,

The pedal should not push back at you, so the booster (servo) needs to come out and be overhauled. If you pull the vacuum hose off the vacuum chamber and insert a drinking straw or similar, does it come out dry or wet with brake fluid. You will need to angle it so it reaches the lowest point of the chamber. This will tell you if the slave cylinder seals are leaking also.

Think i've found the possible cause of the servo problem, slackened it off the bracket and discovered it's a Powertune unit, not a Lockheed unit. Doing a quick google found a lot of references to these units, most not very complimentary! Looks like i've got to try and source the Lockheed unit which I think is a LR18230, is this correct as I've found a supplier on eBay that's selling them for £165 + £6 delivery.

Hello Ron,

As far as I can see, that is the correct unit. A fellow forum member who owns a 2000 or 2200 should however be able to confirm that for you.

Ron.
