I'm pretty sure you can swap it no problem with the manifold still in place. I've never done it that way though, so it's possible that you'd run into some interference the inlet & engine bay sides when you're actually removing the header from the car.
+1 to that. You don't even need to disconnect the cables, just undo at the manifold and lift the whole assembly up on to the inner wing and leave it there.
I'm not sure that the manifold will come out with the carbs in place anyway.
I found when I welded mine its best to use short stitches so as not to heat the steel too much. If it gets too hot the steel becomes hardened and will crack again in short order.
Just examined the manifold now it's out of the engine bay. Number two pipe cracked all the way round, number four cracked three quarters around and more pin holes lit up at the end of the downpipe when torch inserted than a starry night. Fit only for the bin I think!
