alternator replacement

Mines stopped performing its duties and a very interesting discussion with a helpful chap revealed that I can source a replacement from a number of other vehicles. I dont have enough hours in the day to get around the scrappies, so tell me - what can other cars can i nab one from - what have you good people used?

cheers as always :)

Early and late alternators are different, early 11AC ones are less common, and fitted to fewer cars than the later 17 or 18 ACR which was fitted to loads of other cars. It would be helpful to know which type you have.

ACR's can be fitted to early cars but need the mounting bracket and minor mods to the wiring. They can also be changed for LH or RH mounting.

I believe the alternator from a Ford Pinto engine of the mid 80's will fit and has a higher output than a 18ACR
Look out for an old Sierra or Capri

Busy week at work so only just got round to this.....

Only marking I can find is on a sticker

LRA118 11 82 LEB

Make any sense/any help?

I would guess that is the Lucas number for the 18ACR. If so the alternator has a plastic cover on the rear, with a 3 wire multiplug.

Yep thats the one, is this the one that is replaceable with al'nators from a wider variety of cars?

Looks like it's the wrong "hand" for a V8 ,can't say for a 2000
Unless you want to move / change the front cover

I did notice the same seller had some brake servos last week

Is changing the hand simply undoing the 3 or 4 long bolts, rotating the front cover 180 ( or whatever the right amount is ) and then just doing the bolts up again ?

The price was reasonable on this one which is what drew my attention to it !

That's basically it. You remove the pulley and fan then slacken the three bolts that hold the parts of the alternator together just enough so that you can then move the front segment through 120 degrees so what was the adjuster lines up with the other mounting lug.
If the original adjuster was threaded drill it out to take a nut and bolt for the mounting, and use a nut and bolt for the adjuster.
Easy Peasy.

So a follow up question

Done the 120 rotation no problem and drilled out the hole to take the bolt, so that bits fine

The new alterator has a smaller pully, about half the size, is it better to go with this one as the thing will spin faster, or do I need to stick with the larger original pully ?

Personally I'd leave the smaller one on. It came fitted with it so it's designed to use it. It will run faster and in doing so it will up the charge rate at tickover, and by maximum revs it will have long been cut by the regulator. V8's are not high revving so you wont over-rev the unit.

Yet another follow up question

Alternator works fine, even at tick over with head lights on it seems to keep up, with the older one the ameter would have been well over in the negative side

The fan belt is now a bit long with the smaller pulley, at near the max adjustment - haven't been to the shop yet to get another belt but can anyone specify what part number or length of belt I now need ?

My alternator is below the air filter Can you still get at it or do you have to remove the filler my rover is a 2000 tc thanks for any help

It’s a lot easier with the air filter box off. It’s easy to remove (just two 7/16” brass bolts secure the assembly). You want as much room as possible to pull the alternator once undone.
