Bright side lights

Ok guys take all your points on board, yes you can still see the tops of the sidelight lit up , yes they do fit into existing holders, now uncle Dave , your not too far away as we go up north every now and again, at least I will see you on a sunny day , even if you don't see me :D

Now new cars have LED running lights , do they have sidelights as well ?
If motorists are looking out for a band of LED's there's little chance of them seeing a car on dim sidelights
Surely the same principle as motorcyclists using headlights all the time ?

Principle may be the same ie be bright be seen, but also completely different, it's hard enough to see a motorcycle in broad daylight so yes headlight on for them, I'm using sidelights not when it's dark but starting to go dark, before street lights are even on, now I feel if you can't see a big motor car on the road doing legal speeds or below in daylight with sidelights on OR off you a) shouldn't be on the road yourself b) not walk the streets and be allowed to cross a road unaided.

But there are people using the roads with poor vision and/or reactions and worse - drink/drugs etc) so by using headlights you are increasing your chances of getting home safely
It's little comfort saying the person who hit you shouldn't be on the road when you're lying in hospital
I was anti-lights in daylight until I did a fleet drivers awareness course

That argument could go on and on though, a P6 has sealed beam which compared to modern lights are dim, so lets replace them, ahh but they then are not as bright as the newer halogen lights so lets replace them, in fact lets do away with a switch for the lights completely and have them come on with the ignition, which would solve the problem in one go. Shall we agree to disagree :D

Which brings us back to the question of why DRLs do not go off when it's no longer daylight?

I know lots of people who drive cars with automatic lights, wipers etc and most hate them because they can never get the lights and wipers to come on and off when they want them too. I just laugh at them moaning about their modern cars

Has anyone noticed how small some modern indicators are these days too? Very difficult to see some of them, even the LED ones (of course it could just be my eyesight going  )

Oh yes, I was following a Golf or something the other day where the small circular indicator was surrounded by a larger circular brakelight. When the brakes were applied, it was impossible to see the indicator.

Listen boys I have no problem seeing lights or indicators, maybe it is your age :D   that deserves 3 smilies

You can override Auto lights and wipers and even reprograme day light running lights too not to come on if desired.

Yes but they don't make it easy for the non-technically minded drivers to change the mode of operation. So it's only mandatory to have DRLs fitted to new vehicles. They don't actually have to be activated?

Rreminds me of my trip to Alcatraz, the tour guide took us to the solitary confinement cells where the bad boys went when they were misbehaving, he said they were locked in the cell for 23 hrs a day, let out for 1 hr exercise, no windows in the cell. But by law they had to have a light in each cell, which the guide pointed out that they had, he then explained the law didnt say the light HAD to work, which it didnt.

Don't they have this on new motorcycles ?

Yep they do :)

There's quite a large sector of motorcyclists that believe it's safer to have the lights off. Harder to judge the distance of the approaching bike at a junction when it's a glaring headlamp during daylight :|

I'll leave that there for discussion

The inability to judge the distance of a bright light is a known problem that affects pilots and has been a factor in many accidents. As for motorbikes, I suspect it is better that they leave their lights on during daylight - it may be harder to judge how far away they are but at least you can see them :?:

It's probably just better if they leave the bike at home and get a car. Keep the bike for track days.

or have sidelights for daytime bike riding and headlights for when it's getting dark :D OH NO here we go again ! ! !

OMG!

How would I tour France, Belgium, Italy, Spain the IOM etc with flies in my teeth?

No fun in just going round in circles on the track, get bored of the view after 10 minutes

Sorry guys, just to buck the trend....... Or perhaps to join the herd?
I has the dlr reprogrammed on my modern, so that the dipped headlights are on as soon as you start the car.

Now I'll never forget to switch them on.... Or off....... But I will need a laptop, cable and software should I ever want to turn them off
