Building my double garage at last!

Finally!!!
A year after the initial build, ive finally got it rendered! :)

Ive got some hols soon and hopefully I will be able,to get it all finished! :) "weather permitting"
Got to concrete in the tile edging, then paint it,dig out and concrete the drive hardstanding, then build an unwanted 6'x 7' new metal argos shed I bought for £50, in whats left of the garden, for the engines and axles as they will not easily go in the garage loft. :|
OH!
And rebuild the carport!
Nice to have a relaxing holiday innit!!!

Holiday ?? what's one of those ?

In our house it's called "job-rotation", I like to come back to work for a rest !, at least I only do 8-6 in the office !

By the way, how wide is your roller shutter ?

I'm considering changing my garage from two 7 foot doors to one wider door and an access door, and oneof those roller shutter type doors would be ideal.

Roller shutter fitted into the runners is 4.4m internal measurement.
Am pretty sure its a std size door, you can get them bigger, but they have to be made to your spec!
Easier to make the gap 14' by adding a bit to the existing pillars!
The outer garage door pillars are 14' apart.
What is the overall width of your door hole without the center pillar, and whats the overall width of the garage?
You will need a minimum of 30cm from the inner edges of the door to the inner side walls to fit the roller door gubbins!

Well, I've got two 7' doors at the moment with about 18" brick pillar in between, probably 6" or so space at each end.

I wasn't intending to use the full opening, probably just go for a 10' door, just makes it easier to get cars in and out etc.

You can get what they call a 3/4 door that would do the job, doubt if you would get 2 cars in though, you may be able to squeeze them in but you wouldnt have much room spare!!
Also you need about 45cm headroom above the top of the door opening for the roller door to sit.
Mine is as near as damn it, 5.2m wide and 5.75m long, and if it had a flat roof would be 2.5m high.

Hi all.

Well at long last I have had the drive concreted!! :D
They managed to get it all done 24hrs before the bad weather came,so I havent been able to rebuild the carport as yet,but thats what the xmas hol is for if the weather lets me.
A solid job done by a guy who is used to doing bigger stuff.

Nice that Dave,

Couldn't you find a bigger cement mixer?

Now, you just need a nice bit of fence panelling, gravel path down the side, and a security light and it'll be exactly like the photo mockup I did for you ;-)

You still got a copy of that? Must be a very good likeness now.

Bri.

If it doesnt, hasnt, he will be coming right back to do it again!!!
It was covered with 1/2" ply and hessian, and it had 24 hrs to go off enough for the frost not to have affected it!!
I hope!!

Isnt concrete meant to be a chemical bond? - hence it doesnt matter about temperature or moisture within reason... (It sets under water just fine!)

Rich.

hi,
it is and does, but if it does not cure i.e. frost getting into it then it will peel the top layer / skin off the top, but if it has been covered like dave siad and had 24 hours before the cold bad weather then it will be fine.

richard, think about putting a large door in, i.e. if you remove the centre pillar / peer you will need a new RSJ / lintel across the top and could well be special order and expensive. i have just had my plans passed for a double garage and was going to go down that route, but decided to have two especially as it will be 20 foot long x 22 foot wide. just need some good weather so i can start digging the footings out and a nice hole for a lovely big pit.

Richard.
If you search around like I did,you can find some real good deals on good s/h steel rsj's.
I got these four x 5.75m long from a local salvage yard I know for just £100!
Would of been over a grand new!!

Heres the pic of the photoshop mock up that Brian did for me,to see what it would look like, and the 2nd pic is the actual finished build!
No high up security light will be fitted as I have yet to re-build the carport, but will fit one under it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I forgot I'd posted that image up ! only about 3 weeks before I went into hospital, feels like years ago now.

Think I'll leave the garage alone for now and concentrate on actually doing some work on the car
I've got a new project lined up for the new year, although it'll probably be a while before we start on it, but I snapped the guys hand off when he offered ! All I'll say is it's a Rover, and it's older than a P6.

Trust me... (Richard) I'm going to try and guess the car now. :)

When you say older than a P6, do you mean earlier than 1970, or definitely before 1963?

Going by 1963, they had the P5 (3 litre only), P4 (not including the '63 and '64 cars), P3 and P2 (and unofficially P1 etc).

Another question to ask is - is it pre or post war?

Cheers, Adam.

To be honest I won't know for sure until I pick it up, it's currently split between 3 locations although I'm told all the panels are sound, so you can imagine it's not going to be a quick job.
