Can this be repaired?

^^^ WHS ^^^

Stop the water getting in as a matter of priority.

Then do the sections one at a time. Don't try to get your head around the whole job, just one bit at a time.

Is it worth it or should I just say goodbye to the car?

I for one think its worth doing. I've seen a lot worse . If thats the only rust you can find shes done very well and surely worth keeping especialy as she's been with you for time, must be worth some T.L.C :) :) :)

Yeah, and like Quattro said just a bit at a time. I think finding rusted through steel in more than one area made me immediately think "scrap"!. I guess all I needed was a bit of encouragement :D , and at least there's still 8 months m.o.t left to run. Plus, as I've recently bought new wings, replacement o/s/r door, paint and a set of wolfrace slot mags (which I've always loved since I was a kid in the 70's!) I have to finish the job!

Thanks, Will

They can pretty much always be repaired, and with the meccano nature of the P6 you can remove panels, do the odd repair, and bold the panels back on, and it will look no different from the outside.

Just make sure you cut all the rot out for each repair before welding in the new metal, otherwise the old rot will carry on spreading. And don't be afraid to cut out large sections, too often I see people not cutting enough of the rot out, try to make sure you get back to really good solid metal.

Well, I made a start today. Drove the car into work with my mig in the passenger footwell/seating area and a boot full of tools and steel plate :) .
It's been a long day, which wasn't helped by the fact I forgot my angle grinder and jigsaw so had to go all the way back home to get them. I had to use the bus as I'd taken off the door, bonnet and wing. It took 3 hours out of my working day just to pick that stuff up!
I've been back at work a few hours now and taking a break for a cup of tea. I think it's gonna be a long night, so will probably end up either a: working through the night, or b: sleeping here at work. There's a chesterfield settee in the office that will suffice
Of course once I started I found more rot that needed to come out so It's taking longer than I thought. I'm trying to cut out and weld in new metal where I can but some of it may have to be 'patches' unfortunately. Maybe one day I'll get the chance to do a really good job of it but for now I just want to make sure it's water tight and strong. There's a couple of things cropped up that I can't do right now which need doing, inner wings for starters. So maybe at a later date I'll sort them out and some of the stuff I'm patching? For now it's a bit of a race against the clock. The car will have to be out of the workshop tomorrow then it's back on the street where it lives :(

Will.

Hope you made some progress Will. Did you end up doing an all-nighter?

Haha, no. I packed up at 11pm but only because I ran out of welding gas. I was at Machine Mart first thing this morning so I could get more gas and get cracking. It's been another long day of cutting and welding though (11pm finish again). The trouble is I had a bit of bother getting the bonnet to close properly when I put it back on. Now I'm a bit worried that I've warped the mounting area putting too much heat into it? I suppose it's nothing that an extra spacer couldn't fix though?

The welder sits quite nicely in the scooped bit on the passenger side :D

The car in the workshop before work commenced. I was trying out the series 1 grill as I've always preferred the look of them. I'll probably keep it on for running around in, then put the proper grill on for shows (if the car's still going that is)

Looking good! Looks like you found it in the nick of time too...

Rich.

Yeah that's what I thought Rich. Any longer and the car could have been a goner!

Yeah. To be honest I've had a little poke around the other side and you're probably right :( . I should really get the other wing off for a good look. I'll do it after I've recoloured my newly acquired leather interior, I need something more cheery to do at the moment

Will.

that does look nasty Will, like said before it looks like you got it just in time, but have i ve learned most things on the p6 can be fixed if the man doing it can hang on in there. you do right mix it up a bit and it wont seem so bad.
