Carb float bowl removing?

What method do you guys recommend for removing the float bowls (for cleaning) off HS8 carbs? More specifically, how do you deal with the flexible pipe? Undoing the sleeve nut and pulling it out of the bottom of the bowl makes it very fiddly to replace. Doing this the other evening after the rear carb flooded reminded me of the same fiddly job on a Morris Marina 1300 about 30 years ago. I didn't enjoy it then either!

I don't remember ever having to do it with the carb(s) still in the car. Especially in A series engines it's so much easier to pull out the complete carb, even with the cables still connected, turn it upside down and do whatever you like with it.
In a Rover TC, if you want to avoid removing the carbs and manifold, i guess you can unbolt and remove the heat shied. This will give you some more space to work underneath the carbs, even though the exhaust manifold will still be a problem.
In a different approach, have you thought about using a combination of vaccuum and compressed air to clean the bowls without removing them?

Hi Demetris, the front one is easy to clean that way but one of the screws holding down the 'lid' of the rear carb's float bowl is hidden below the bracing bar. Also I doubt if there's room to remove the float. Removing the complete bowl is simple except for that blasted tube. It can be done with the air cleaner off but the heatshield still in place.
I guess what I'm asking is whether the other end of the tube should be undone instead, perhaps complete with the jet sleeve?
Or should I just stock up on spare rubber olives and the associated tiny washers that inevitably get dropped?

That's what I do with other HS carbs, because if you undo it out of the bowl you'll end up with a leak if you refit, and if you renew the rubber then it's so difficult to fit one of those properly in-situ that you'll end up with a leak that way as well. I find it easier all round to fit HIF6's instead....

I was about to suggest the same thing. Pull the jet along with the float bowl. It'll give you the best chance of a working carb at the end of the job. I'm surprised you can't get to the read bowl top with a RHD cable, I seem to remember pulling the rear lid on my LHD car without a problem when I had HS8's on.

Two months on and I'm probably tempting fate by saying that it's still leak free. 8)
I definitely won't risk it again though, next time I'll remove the jet along with the bowl as advised.

Shows what I know :). Glad to hear you got her running again. Need to pull the front hif6 carb on my car as the flavor valve is leaking like a bugger at the moment.
