Choke cable

Arrrgggghhhh.... The knob on the choke cable has come off due to the damn thing being so hard to pull out (and yes I do know how to operate it correctly). Now got a small pair of molegrips on it as the pliers were continually slipping off leaving me with blood blisters... Was bidding on a new one on eBay and was outbid as auction ended whilst I was at work (went for £21 + postage), (the air was blue when I got home).
Do they still sell them and if so could someone tell me where. My poor hands can't take much more and my left knee keeps hittting the molegrips. Its more than a bit annoying right now

Hi Jules,

Choke cables are quite common.

I replaced both my choke and fuel reserve for about £4-£6 each. Find a MINI supplier or go to any decent motor factors or if you can't find one then try Halfords.

Before anyone comments on the Fuel resrve being a solid core cable the cable I used was the heater cable for a MINI. My car is a series 2 so I swaped the little heater picture for the old one off the petrol reserve.

Obviously the earlier cars without the circular knobs are more difficult to come by but if you are not bothered then the later type are easy enough to come by.

If you can't find a local supplier then pick up a MINI magazine in the news agents have a flick through and scribble down a few phone numbers. £21 is a bit of a mark up on a £5 cable.

There are other types of cars but the mini is so common you are more likley to pick up one easier.

Colin

Cheers chaps, must say the current/broken cable does look like a mini one and if they fit (which clearly they must) this is most likely the route I will be taking. However the reserve cable is the hook type so do I go for a matching pair! Just out of curiosity what should they be. Found the one on eBay which is advertised as a chock cable :p and the bidding is quite high. Is the cable from Wadhams the hook type?

..'Er John

This 1965 car wot I got. The one that had 6 grand spent at JP Restorations.
It has round (but not like the later) choke and petrol reserve knobs.
It also has funny heater control knobs and a weird interior light off the mirror and another at the back over the windscreen..
Is it a bitsa then???

Sorry Jules. I plead guilty to the e bay choke cable. I think perhaps I've had my come uppance from this item too!

We had an early '65 2000 as my fathers' first new car. Yes, the interior lights you describe are correct. Personally I like the one down the back of the mirror very much. The one over the centre of the rear window should be the same as fitted to the P5 - oblong, chrome top half, lens lower half - I think they look much more in keeping with the car than the later centre round lens. Rumour has it that very early cars also had lights under the leading edge of the dashboard, but I don't remember our's having these.

Somebody was advertising these under-dash lights very recently on ebay. A picture was attached to the ad. I had never heard about these before.

John Larkin.

Nope!

Not got any lights under the dash...

...now then I have lost my horn and main beam flasher...
...what the hell have I knocked - there are only two fuses on the whole bloody car! lol

Hello again (just back from hols - It's a tough life!)
I was asked to look at a 1965 Rover 2000 recently that had the dash mounted lights (correct from launch to Feb '66) the mirror mounted light (correct from Feb '66 to Oct '67 - suspect added by owner) and the rear mounted light (correct to Oct '67). Chris (York) (or, anybody else) if you would like to see the photo's that I took of these dash-mounted lights then please send me your e-mail address as I cannot attach anything to e-mails via the forum.
The (festoon type) bulbs often fell out of these lights if you slammed the doors (heaven forbid!) and they often got hot enough to melt the plastic housings! A pair have recently been sold on e-bay.
Regards, John.

John.
You telling me that the rear view mirror in the 1963 gold P6 car with the light fitted is incorrect for the year. There is/was so much "wrong with the car its a joke, but am getting there in putting back to a "proper" 2000.
The NEC is only a month away and it still resembles a base unit. The correct engine is back in along with a rebuilt gearbox, bonnet, boot and rear decker panel, rear valance panel, o and the side quater panels. Just got to fit the whole of the interior four doors, wings, lights correct wheels and any other bits thats hanging about.
THEN start the thing. It may just be going up to Birmingham on a transporter.
Any one got one.
See you at the meeting John.
Paul.

There's a first for everything, but i would rather tow it from London to Birmingham by the hairs around my nuts.
Anyway i think hell would freeze over before pete condisended to offer his services to me.
Well back to the original thread of choke cable.

Fascinated by John's assertion on the dates for the interior light down the back of the mirror. We took delivery of our 2000 at about Easter 1965 from Stevens's of Fleet, Hampshire. It had a light down the back of the mirror. As I recall the housing was finished in black crackle finish mazak. As previously stated I don't recall the under dash lights, but that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't have them - I would certainly have remembered though if it was prone to shedding bulbs! I am absolutely certain that the mirror lamp wasn't an extra - the only extra we had was a pair of Cibie square fog lamps.

Anybody got a definitive view on these lamps - Rudiger perhaps?

Chris

Hello Chris,
The dates quoted by me all derive from James Taylor's excellent book on the Rover P6 as I do not have the memory or knowledge to contradict him!
The light at each end of the dashboard has a small cut-out and a switch toggle visable on the front face and can be easily seen when sat in the car (or thro' the side windows) - No need for any gymnastics!
Perhaps a trawl thro' early P6 brochures may lead to further facts.
Regards, John.

Okay folks I can not deny the thought of a matching choke cable and petrol reserve cable is really getting the better of me. Before I commit myself to an extortionate sum re the one on eBay that ends in about 8hours, does anyone know if / where / how much one would be ?

Oh and my appologies for causing/stiring up ill feelings of other members re some of my previous posts ???
