Classic Car Rescue has been exposed

If you pick up a copy of this week’s Classic Car Weekly, you’ll be able to read the full, in-depth exposé of Channel 5’s weekly car resto show Classic Car Rescue. Why is this significant? Because it shows how little these TV production companies know about our classic car world.
That it is a specialist place for people with knowledge, passion and skill is a given. But rather than the factual inaccuracies and obvious false premise set up when the presenters state they are going to restore a car within a few scant weeks, it is the assumption that what is presented is somehow ‘good enough’ for the audience that galls me the most.

Can you believe that within the programme schedulers listings it is referred to as a documentary? If it was living up to that billing then it would have to show and explain well-researched facts. If it was documenting anything worth knowing, there would not be the disapproval from those of us within the old-car industry. And if it was really a documentary, it would be focused on delivering the truth to its audience. Which is exactly what Classic Cars for Sale’s sister title Classic Car Weekly has done this week.

When you read the news in the ’paper, you’ll see how real journalists are able to unpack the news and bring all the evidence about the programme to Channel 5, leaving no doubt about the actions presented on telly. Add this to authentic, relevant advice from agencies such as VOSA, HPI and the DVLA, and all the gut feelings you had about the show’s credentials will be confirmed.

There’s only one piece of light at the end of the tunnel: the show that portrayed the restoration of one MGB gathered 1.2Million viewers. If even a fraction of these people end up as classic car owners, then that’ll be a good thing. Until then, I appeal to Channel 5: ‘Enough already!’

I read th Classic Car Weekly article yesterday, we all know what happens on this show is contrived but this was taking it a stage too far, I can't believe thy thought they could con the viewers that by and large would know quite abit about cars!

That's the crux of it for me. It's not that it's poor quality TV that's the problem - I can live with that quite happily (Celebrity Juice, anyone??). It's that the whole thing completely insults the viewer's intelligence. It's like they're saying "We could make an insightful quality programme that informs, educates and entertains (after all, the technical team clearly has the skill), but we can't really be bothered so we'll shove this out instead. You and I both know it's cr@p, but it's easy to make and we don't have to think, so hey you can swallow it anyway!"
But maybe I'm old fashioned - I'm seeing that mentality more and more prominently everywhere in the modern world. :(

who is this chimp doing the valuations?

they;ve just spent over £3k doing up a mini thats now worth about £1500 max, not £5k

Ah, but it has Cooper badges, 1000cc, arch extensions with skinny tyres, and don't forget the grille with spot lights which fit like a sock on a chickens lip, £5k any day of the week, (that has a z in it), AND Bernie n Mario, the two experts restored it.

John.

did you see the cable tie around the exhaust, obviously holding it to a mount?

that;ll smell fairly funky when someone starts kicking the poor little things head in to make it move!

At least we now know why we put oil in carburettor dashpots. And to think, all those years I thought it was to damp the piston.

I thought it was common knowledge that the oil lubricates the carburettor :?

It seems to happen every week, they go round looking for parts find a handful of bits barter till blue in the face walk away with a BARGAIN! Then never use any of them   steering wheel, cones n do nuts etc
Only £2600 spent on labour and parts :?: £720 for the car with the all important owners hand book and a valueation of £5000 with another tatty engine bay and no mention of the handbook...

Wonder what value he puts on his 8 series BM.........

Dont forget that price inc bare metal re-spray, new interior, stainless exhaust and all the welding. Wonder what their ' specialists' hourly rates are ? 5 days to do the work at least 4 of them to pay, thats 1k gone already. Said it before and I will say it again "QUALITY" sheer quality.

It was so interesting I fell asleep before the end . Would you shake hands with Bernie when he's spat in his hand ? Yuk......
There used to be a character in Viz called Cockney W@nker based on the comic/actor Mike Reid .I think Bernie is a bigger w@nker

Propping a car on its side with a thin piece of wood just shouldn't be shown on TV these days; there'll be some characters that end up doing it at home. I appreciate Mario later intervened.

Bernie knows his stuff an Austin badge on the front and a morris badge on the back.Ed China would'nt do that. :D

Just caught up with the Mini episode. Quality stuff. I just can't believe what folk think their knackered rotten old Minis are worth. I sold mine with plenty of Mot and tax and in full working order with sporting extras 15 years ago for £325. How stupid do I feel now when scrap is being sold for more than double that.

On a different note, did anyone see Chasing Classic Cars on Discovery Turbo last night? They entered a bloke's yard (somewhere in the US - I forget where) and he's got a few Rover SD1s all under covers along with Lancia exotica! I'd love to have a butcher's round in there.
