Cylinder head - To seal or replace

There's nothing like rebuilding an engine in the bedroom ! :D
Yup, well spare room, the problem is that I now to replace the carpet. The misses was not too happy as well. Beats doing it in the garage. Also I had been warned by the engine shop about being very clean. So doing in the house was the best option I had. Very convenient for coffee, nice and warm too. I recommend it, just don't let the other half find out. :D

Must have been fun carrying it downstairs once it was complete! :D How much did we decide they weighed? 185kg? :p

I left the head off till I got to the kitchen. :D And it was still very heavy. Just took it one step at a time. Also now need new stair carpet. The engine was nice and clean but still left a small 'smudge'. The carpet was cheap stuff I got a few years ago and as I've got two cats and a black lab who loves puddles I don't fork out for expensive carpet. Was due to be changed, just needs to be done a little quicker now. :p

Skateboards also are very good for moving engines about. :;):

Got the car back on the road today after having the new gasket fitted. I was fortunate in that there was no damage to the head. What a difference it has made, apart from the obvious it seems to have more power, mind you the old gasket was in a mess, it was aslo split between in the middle.

So Big thanks for all the help and replies very much appreciated, I was starting to get withdrawal symptoms even if it was only a week.

I'm not suprised its got more power, especially if as you say it had gone between two cylinders, this has the effect of halving the compression across these two cylinders which reduces the power.

Glad it's all sorted now, hope it didn't cost too much :)

Sorry Richard I didn't even think of taking pictures, wish I had now. As for costs the gasket set cost £40 inc P&P, very good quality one. As for the cost of fitting I managed to get it done for free well sort off. there is a local garage near to me very friendly anyway I managed to negotiate a deal where I worked a few days around the garage (i'm no mechanic) mostly doing all the dirty jobs that needed doing and they fitted the head gasket. It probably saved me around £250 - £300, I was happy and they were happy, everyone a winner !

Now thats the sort of deal I like, I have a similar arrangement with my mate, when I need MOT's I spend the day making tea, and doing the jobs he trusts me to do, to be honest I'd do it anyway, never get enough garage time !

Now that is very cool. I'm a software engineer but was a mechanic in my early 20's. The MOT station I use do a lot of brakes, always tempted to ask to have a go. When I took my P6 in they were rebuilding the rear end of an old VW camper.
