Dealer window stickers...

Hello to one and all... In a quest to detail my P6B I wanted to get a period dealer sticker for my rear window. With the help of Vaultsman (thanks a million sir!) and a firm that does superb reproduction stickers I will be having some stickers made up soon... I just wondered if any of you good folks still have your original dealer stickers in the rear window of your P6's (or perhaps your dealer tax disc holder)...? If so let's see them, I would like to compare them to what I'm getting made up  My car was sold by Coombs of Guildford so I assume they had special (slightly more up-market looking!!!) stickers as opposed to the generic British Leyland ones...

My latest P6 was from 'Colliers' of Birmingham, & the sticker is still there. It's quite upmarket in that the letters are individually stuck on - I'll post a picture soon.

My first car as a seventeen year old, back in 1985, was a '71 Lincoln Continental Town Coupé! It had small number plates in US frames, which said 'Holmes-Tuttle' across the top and 'Beverly Hills Lincoln' at the bottom, in 3D chunky sans serif capital letters, picked out in blue paint that matched the car. I paid seven hundred quid for two tons of rust with a seven point six litre vee eight, in blue metallic with a white vinyl roof. Damn, I wish I'd kept that car, it was magnificent! Can't find any old photos of mine, here's a piccy off the web from a brochure, it was exactly that model, with the rare wide grille and matching bonnet, and the same colour combo, but the interior had a bench seat and blue upholstery.
Sorry to hijack your thread.

Not quite a window sticker, but a far nicer touch in my opinion :D

I'm sure it used to be plated, possibly some brass type finish but is now polished stainless, and screws onto the drivers sill tread plate. Just need to swipe some bling stainless screws from work at some point

I'm sure I remember seeing more of those "coachbuilder's" plates on P6's when I was a lad, exactly in that position too, was I imagining that? I don't have my original Henly's dealer sticker or tax disc holder but I did find a Civil Service Motoring Association tax disc holder jammed down the back of the dash, I remember plenty of those being about at one point.

Jon wasn't it you who wanted my Henlys tax disc holder??

Send me your address on a PM and I'll get it en route.

Cheers
Nick

Here's a picture of mine. It needs a bit of a clean. :D

The sticker above it is a Triplex one.

Interesting stuff this! Would love to see how your repro sticker turns out Ash...

My '72 3500 was first registered as a company car in Peterborough (with Precision Tools Ltd) but I don't know which dealer it came from.... were there many Rover dealerships in the town I wonder?

On a related note (sort of) has anyone gone down the route of putting a period tax disc in there motor?

Cheers, Nidge

I was looking for a Henlys sticker last year. I think someone did send me photos I will have a look.

I like scanning the back of old car mag's (Motor, Car et al) to see where the dealers were at the time... I'm sure if you bought a few old car mags from eBay or an autojumble you might stumble upon a BL/Rover dealer in Peterborough...

I'm just the same Ash, I've got a complete set of 'Motorsport' from 1971 and every now and then it comes out of the cupboard for a perusal.... I love the ads in them, they're either full of heaving macho men trying to sell you tyres or dreamy looking Bond girls draped over a Lotus Elan +2, top stuff. A favourite is one frm a London dealership trying to shift 'the last of the coachbuilt Mini Coopers', complete with fully deseamed shell, black paint, black windows and full leather interior, price on asking.... tempted to ring 'em up and see if it's still there

Regarding my 3500... low and behold, tucked away in the history file is a booklet listing all Rover distributors and dealerships in Britain as of October 1971, I've only just found it! It lists three in Peterborough (still Northants then) and of course Coombes & Son Ltd of Portsmouth Road, Guildford for your own car. Their telephone number is 62907 / 9, give 'em a call mate, they might have a few stickers left in stock....

Nidge

My Rover never came with a dealer sticker in the rear window, instead it came with a metal bracket that fits around the number plate and carries the name of the car dealership that sold the car when new in 1974. My rear number plate still carries this 1974 bracket... :D

Ron.

Not a dealer window sticker, but a period window sticker on the rear windscreen of my 68 2000TC. Its for the Beaverton Beavers Baseball team (Stop sniggering at the back there!)

That's a cool sticker you've got there sdibbers! Don't even think about peeling it off!
I think I might make up a decal saying "My other car is also a V8 Rover P6". Anybody else want one?

I promise that I'll never scrape that off. I actually contacted the beavers today with the picture. And got a polite response saying thanks. :)

Here's a couple of interesting rear window stickers for you Ash:

6thMay20103.jpg

This is the newly installed rear screen on Tony Bunting's 1972 2000 auto. We replaced his original one (the heated element didn't work) with this one from a 1976 2200TC. Seeing as Tony's car is a real Henly's car it seemed very suitable. Tony's car has the rare sight of green Sundym on a 2000 - factory option, rarely specified until the 2200.

This one is a goody, to say the least. We've just bought a low mileage 1974 3500 auto which was originally a Denevo car. All the paperwork and the back window sticker are still present - rare as rocking horse poo.

I'm going to get some further shots of this one as we may be able to get some replica stickers made up. I've never seen one of these before.

Cheers
Nick

I've been doing a bit of research on my car's history and acording to the heritage certficate it was first supplied to Westgate Motor Company Gloucester for sale on the 19th June 1972. From what I've learned so far the garage shut down in the early 80s but that's about all I can find. Does anyone know anything about this garage or if they did a window sticker at all?

Cheers

Dave
