Hi all,

Just looking for some pics of the front hub assembly and how it goes together. I didnt take it apart so i dont know the order, and the pics in the workshop manual and parts manual arent very clear!

Thanks,

Rich

THanks DAve - Thats what i have from the parts manual. Just doesnt quite look like what i have and i dont want to get it wrong in such a crucial place!

I'll get a picture of the bits i have and take photos as i go. That way if i get it wrong you guys can tell me i guess :)

@quattro - thats what we'll end up with... Just how the internals of the hub go together I'm worried about... This is the problem with not taking it apart yourself i guess!

Thanks,

RIch

Take a piccy of what you have. It's been a while since I rebuilt mine, but to be honest, they are not too difficult build up.

Well here is what we have...

When you look at the work shop manual shot Dave posted above I cant see GHS114 or 538797 unless they happen to be stuck on the pin the that hub sits on and inside the hub?

Also - 'pack with lithium grease' - does that mean pack the entire centre of the hub?

If that's right it'll look like this with the bearings on?

Thanks,

Rich

GHS114 is the hub seal, and 538797 is on the stub axle for the seal to run on. You can pack the bearings, and then put a dollop of grease into the hub between the bearings, but don't completely fill the hub.

The order would be to fit the two bearing tracks into the hub, then place the large inner bearing on to its track, followed by the seal, then place the outer bearing on to its track, and slide the hub assembly on to the stub axle. The outer end has the thick washer with the tag first, followed by the nut and the castellated locking ring, which is held by the split pin once the bearings are adjusted. Then knock the hubcap on, with a smaller dollop of grease inside. Dollops are a universally known Imperial quantity (Don't use Metric dollops)......

thanks harvey. I've used imperial dollops(an imperial dollop is 1.130039 metric dollops apparently) and got the hub all on just as it started raining. So now i have the brake calliper and bleeding and then have a quick look at the other side. Get the new wing and front valance on then try again for the MOT....

Thanks for all your help :) Didnt want to make any more silly mistakes!

spot what i've missed...

looks like it's got to come off one more time ... ;)

D'oh!!! Never mind practice makes perfect! At least you didn't try to shield us from the full horror of what you forgot.

I'll clean it up a bit... The disk didnt fail so i just want to get it MOTd for now. Ill order new disks in a month or so...

I would read it as thoroughly pack the bearings with a smear on the outer races and a thin wipe on everything else to stop surface corrosion, then stick it together, (remembering to fit all the bits.....sorry, couldn't resist)...

Is that an imperial or metric smear? and when does a smidgen of grease become a smear or how many smidgens to the smear?

Everybody knows it's six smidgens to the smear.

Imperial maybe, but there's ten metric ones.

Nice job Rich, when I took Sparky apart there were no shields on there, so I managed to find a pair but got the wrong ones so had to modify them with an angle grinder
