Endeavour

The superb new Inspector Morse prequel series 'Endeavour' aired the first episode last night.

Playing a small part as the Superintendents car is my 2000, probably the most modern thing in the series, which is set in 1965.

Here's the shoot for the first scene (20:33). It took all day and involved getting the cars dirty to keep the light from reflecting on the cameras.

I watched this last night and remarked how lovely the 2000 looked, didn't realise it was yours Nick, very jealous :D

One of the coaches at the very end was on a "C" plate as well.

I hope you didn't hang around those Public Conveniences when filming was finished........

I did four shoots in total, there will be more. That shot around the public convienience took all day, they re-took the scene dozens of times.

The quality control in this series is incredible. I was in awe of the suits and attention to detail (you'll notice my very period blanket disappears from the back shelf in later episodes).

I'm still getting the mud off the car.

I never watched Morse, I tried a couple of times but it never appealed to me at all, but I have to say I enjoyed Endeavour, and the cars and street shots made it even more interesting.

It must be nice to see your own car in it, especially in a pretty major role.

I have an inability to watch anything fictional at all, I did see a few of the original series years ago though.

I MOT'd my 2000 today, and we've covered just 1200 miles last year - a good 2/3'rd of which was to do with 'Endeavour'. She's still wearing some muddy scars.

The Jaguar has gone into the paintshop now for a respray - the modern two pack repaint comes over far too bright on the cameras, mine is mostly original but still needed a fair amount of dirt in order not to reflect the lights.

By the time we shot scenes from a later episode centred around a farm just off the M40, she was truly filthy.

She's now back near to her usual resplendent self.

I am sure that it would make you feel very proud Nick.

I look forward to seeing it when it is eventually aired out here in Australia.

Yes, but it was a job, and my 2000 is in some ways too nice to be used regularily for filming - the producers were adamant they wanted a 1965 Rover 2000, hence why she was headhunted. If there was regular reliable work forthcoming it'd be worth having a more cosmetically challenged but absolutely top-notch mechanically car for this alone.

Winning the several major trophies she has, and being featured in the very posh Stephen Bayley coffee table book 'Cars' in 2008 takes some beating.

Hi Nick,

That is very impressive! You really need two cars, both mechanically spot on, but one you can use in all weather whilst the other is kept for special outings only.

I am sure you'll keep your 1965 Rover 2000 forever.

Ron.

That was the reason I've had two cars for many years.

I've had the 2000 since September 2005 (I first saw her in 1999), so, no, she's not going anywhere :)

I see your reluctance to keep the V8 on the street, but I'd be tempted to rather than sell her. You regret it already but you may find you're kicking yourself very hard from the minute she changes hands. Better value storage may become available before too long & financial recompense soon slips through the fingers & leaves you wondering why you've nothing to show for selling a treasured possession, especially one which took a long time to find.

Point taken Gary.

That was my plan when I bought the Lady C. The V8 would be my daily driver and Lady C would only come out on special ocassions

Maybe once the V8 is back on the road I can get back to that plan

Great stuff Nick. Doing us all proud.

Pity I missed the first episode last night (too busy out mucking about with my P6  ). I shall try catch up on first episode and make a point of watching the series. All the while boring my Missus to death by repeatedly telling her "that's Nick on the Forum's car that is". :D .

Though I have got a bit fed up the police TV dramas over the years, your pic's have whetted my appetite and it looks like there is way too much Rover content to ignore.

Don't get too excited Steve, my car's only screen for about 20 seconds!

Nice one Nick - a nice bit of televisual history to go with the car's history file mate! I thought I recognised the reg' number in the (brief) shot where the car is driven towards the camera - I had to do a double take

Also saw your ad on ebay for your Three Thousand Five - it must be a real wrench even thinking about letting it go... I hope it all works out ok though, one way or another.

Nidge

Thanks Nidge.
That shot with the car coming towards the camera was actually shot about six times and was quite hairy - the Jag and the Rover were really moving...

Cheers
Nick

I can well imagine so Nick - last year, a few of us from the Sweeney forum got together in Bracknell to have a look at one of the locations used in the 'wages snatch' sequence in the Richard Burton film 'Villain'... course, being a quiet Sunday morning we couldn't resist re-enacting the run up to it where robbers try to box in the motor carrying the wages... all done at a gentle pace I should add, but we had to be very careful not to knock each other's motors about going round the roundabouts, or knock off the video camera that was mounted on Degsy's near side front wing!

'Villain' is well worth checking out by the way (dirt cheap on Amazon) - shot in 1970 and features a couple of white S1 Police P6s, a Zircon Blue P6 used by Nigel Davenport plus the main 'character car' which is a brand spanking new Silver Birch / Burnt Grey P5B Coupe with a 'factory' reg (HXC 802H).

As you say it looks so modern compared with other vehicles. Many of use probably don't remember the impact the P6 made back in 1963. I was talking recently to a gent in his 80's about cars he said 'Yes, there was one Rover it looked really different from the others, what was it, ermm, 2000 was it? I really liked that one. I recall my French teacher in the early 80's recalling how he could remember seeing his first P6 and how stunning it was. I must say there is something about that purity of line of the early cars. Has anyone seen the film 'Made in Dagenham'? They weren't so careful, set in 1968 and every p6 is a series 2!!

Indeed. The purity of line stuff was the reason I got mine de-mirrored (when I first had her she had silly door mirrors in the wrong place)..

My only qualm is that I'm not sure the Superintendent would have actually had one in 1965 - yet that's what the producers wanted. A P5 or a big Ford would have been more likely.
