Finally started replacing my P6 steering box.

If there were no lock stops the road wheel could turn too much and the tyre could foul the chassis or wheel arch., or any other strain point on the steering/suspension gear. So there are lock stops on the drop arm to stop the situation arising and need to be adjusted to suit. It could be the fact it's the difference between V8 and four pot arms or steering box, or as quattro says something else is amiss.
 
Hmm, but this stop seems to work on one way only. I missed something here apparently.
It is adjustable, so I will try to see if this helps.

I tried both ways, with and without this bracket. Even without the adjustment bolt which I removed it still touches the arm.

If I turn the steering wheel both ways (without the bracket) to the end I can easily spin both tyres without touching anything. Also, this stop only works one way, could these end stops be provided in the V8 box already perhaps?

And that's why we need to take photos! Also, I'm so glad I'm not the only one that does this sort of thing!
 
I think you might find that's the difference between left and tight hand drive. Yours is LHD and the manual pic is RHD.

Time for a test ride before putting back the paravan and wipers, should drive like a new car now .

I did some testing this afternoon and everything is working fine now, no more hesitations while turning the steering wheel, smoother and lighter steering. Feels great now.

Yeah, I know it's a steering wheel Wilfred, but what make is it? I have never seen one like that.

Hi, it’s made of wood.

The reason I looked for another one is that I damaged the old one while removing it.
Some funny bloke tightened the central nut far too much, so that I even had to use my air wrench to get it loose, also a pulley pooler (don’t know the English word for it) to get the wheel from its axis, which caused some damage..

Anyway, it’s quite difficult to find a decent other steering wheel until I found this one.
