fuel additive

To mindlessly say old cars run happily on u/l is simply not true.

TP!! :x
I think you will find that is NOT!!! what I said ???
What I said was that in my experience, with my cars, ive had no problems!!!
ALSO!!
""If as an owner, "whoever it may be",you want to go to all the expense and hassle of fitting SD1 heads, composite head gaskets, additives, fuel injection, efi, ecu's ,etc, etc!! then go for it,its your car!!
If you have a std p6v8 whatever year it is,and it is running fine, then there is no earthly reason why you need to go to these measures!!""

Some cars do have problems, some dont, some marques need rebuilds, head work, some just need re-tuning and plugs,or an additive!!

And another thing!!
Dealers and engineering companies do not always tell you the whole truth however believable or knoweledgeable they may seem!!!
Most joe public back then belived what was said, and many did have expensive u/l work done to their cars when it wasnt required!!
If you went in back then and said, "I need my head rebuilt for u/l", how many would say!!
"actually all you need to do is retard the ign by a bit, rather than spend £££'s on a new head"
After all they have to make money somehow!!

Dave

Seems to me you may as well run your V8 on unleaded until and if you have problems and then when you do a head overhaul , do whatever you want , fit inserts , change the heads etc

While it works well enough for your liking , leave it alone

Incidentally I remember some "new " type of petrol in the mid 80's from one of the big names that made my 1.6 Sierra with the Emax engine unable to climb hills

Thats what I am getting at, what you do depends on what resourses you have. If it is an occasional motor and runs OK and you dont push the car, run u/l. If you want modern car performance for daily use and need to know you will get to work on time every day and can drive down to Cornwall at the weekend, then you are brave with an old 10.5:1 boris under the bonnet

Mines been in everday use for 7yrs, 40k miles and I will go anywhere in it,without worrying about boris under the bonnet!
My grandads as earlier stated, was his daily drive from 85-05,and 200k miles till it got killed!!
The fuel vapourisation they occasionaly suffer from was cured by fitting an inline electric fuel pump.
We all know your thoughts on the 10.5:1 engines,I think its time to stop slating them,as clearly by the responses, they are not all as crap as you make them out to be!!

I am not slating them, I am merely stating some of their drawbacks, which Rover themselves altered in 1973. Progress is progress ... I have toyed with a P5B, but the first thing to go would be the engine, nothing else... would be lovely with a late 4l Range Rover in. I think if the P6 had continued in production into the 1980s they would all have been injection as the SD1 vitesse.

Really and truely I could not care less what people run. I am simply advising novices that a 10.5:1 is not ideal, as I would state of a V8 above 4l for cooling purposes or anything K series! I know I will get "I have driven my Rover 25 to the moon" and "my 10.5:1 lump to Mars in a weekend" and "my next door neighbour went to space in 4.5 Range Rover". I am merely saying they have their problems as ALL cars do.

Hi folk's,

My two pence worth.I have a 72S,and use redex fuel additive,i think a capfull to a tank, just as practice since i bought the car over two years ago.

I don't believe there is any benefit from it,and i will probably stop using it, come commisioning the old girl this spring. As for timing,i've been playing with it since i've owned the car,and actually carry a 7mm spanner in the glove box,for fine adjustment's!.

As the old addage goes....if it aint broken don't fix it.Just enjoy.

Cheers.
