Garage find P6!"CON 591"Runs SWEET,Passed MOT,Now to use it

I prefer to keep my cars as original,or at least very faithfull,"upgrading" to original as poss!
Not into modding classics like some fitting efi etc.
Each to their own!

A 2000 auto is for times when you're in no hurry , you've got the V8 or the TR6 if you want speed

I'd like a turbocharged Volvo 5 cylinder but I'd keep it in the Volvo V70 where it belongs ,ideally a T5 with full leather ......

How about fitting a mini supercharger to the 2000 lump ? Loads more torque, not sure what the auto box would make of it though

You'd need some way of lowering the compression ratio if you were going to supercharge it. Would be a interesting project though. Hmm....

Well as I was really looking for a winter project to keep me busy, and the 2000 didnt take very long! :)
I have therefore decided to give the V8 some much earned TLC this autumn/winter as its been my daily driver for the best part of 10 yrs now.
So,very shortly the 2000 auto is going to become my daily driver while I strip the V8 naked, "panels off only",check for hidden rust and fix, give it a new coat of paint on the set of rust free panels I have collected for it,and then refurbish the best of the 2 sets of bronze flat pleat seats!!
The tudor webasto needs to be recovered as well,so any suggestions on where is best to buy a cover much appreciated.
Ive got NOS front and rear bumpers + o/riders,but the ones on it are excellent anyway.
The mechanicals are all good so I will leave them alone, apart from a good clean, maybe a lick of paint and a service.
May consider getting my spare set of 14" rostyles rechromed if I win enough on the lottery!

Am I F!!!
Am gonna have a good prod and tap with a dolly hammer to i.d any rust or weak spots,am going to do localised repairs unless its obvious its easier to replace the complete panel, section if its available!

Morning all..

When I went for a visit to my nephews about 10m away, giving the car a good run, it was very apparent that the performance is down! It feels as if its holding back at 50-60?
When standing and on tick over,it does seem to rev quite happily,so either something is wrong,or it really is gutless!!
Not having driven a 2000sc auto before I cant compare,so am just going by my gut feelings!
Now this could be caused by a couple of things!
Most probably is the fact the fuel pump has now packed up,so it wasnt delivering sufficient fuel!!
Another possible reason is that an exh box baffle has collapsed causing back pressure to occur once a certain speed is reached,or full throttle is used.
As I now have a complete s/h "new but never driven in anger" set of 3 boxes I will swap the 1st and 2nd boxes as I already fitted a new s/s rear I had pro tem,and then see what happens.
Hopefully the rebuild kit will arrive this morn, just gotta wait for postie to come,as I cant put the car on the ramp to swap exh over till its driving!

I'd go with the fuel pump first, I had similar behaviour on my 2.2TC and it steadily got worse until the car wouldn't do more than 40, turned out the pump bolts were loose and it was steadily working it's way off the side of the block.

>>UPDATE<<.

Fuel pump now rebuilt, and squirting well, not a lot of real difference noticed.
Fitted the correct rev counter, clock and pod I obtained yesterday, removed speedo to find the right wires to tap into.
I bought a nice job lot of new/used 2000+V8 spares yesterday,and obtained 2 x 2000 rev/clock pods for strip speedo car complete.
Now have a complete and rare V8 S1 rev/clock pod and a 2000 one possibly for sale!
Only seems to rev to just over 5000,tick over on dial set to 700.
If I wire it different tick over is 1200 and it shows revs above red line!
My gut still tells me there is something holding it back from higher revs and whatever it is,its also affecting the acceleration, which isnt good anyway.
I did a standing start foot down time and it seems to be about 12-14 secs 0-60!
It holds 2nd gear up to 60 but as it doesnt want to go much beyond you have to back off for it to change up to top!
When you drive normal but quick it runs out of puff at 60,it will go quicker gradually but needs a good straight road!!
Going to change the front and middle exh boxes now its cooled down,as 17yrs standing could of caused one of them to collapse creating excess back pressure at certain speeds/revs!!

I have to say, I would say 12-14 secs 0-60 isn't bad for a 2000 auto. I had my 2.2TC manual timed and managed a best 10.5, which if I remember was roughly the same as the factory figures.

Thats what I thought going by the book info, but as it then runs out of steam, maybe theres back pressure build up,or thats just how they are!
Wont take me long to swap the boxes and try it!!

Are your front brakes still binding ?

From what I recall the 0-60 time for a 2000 auto was about 17 sec and 15 sec for a 2200 auto
Maybe the old girl just doesn't want to be hurried ?

Brakes are now spot on,set up points, plugs, timing, carb etc etc.
Unless the coil, conds,or ballast are breaking down under load??
Gotta have spares somewhere in my stash!

Does anyone have current experience of running a 2000sc auto?
What speeds in gears std and foot down, top speed,0-60, 0-top speed time and what speed is top speed!
Stationary rev up to figure "if you have a rev!"

Well its not the exhaust boxes, just swapped the 2 over and its no different, except the middle box was full of oil and I created a big smoke screen on the test drive, just letting it burn off!

They're all different IMHO.

Fastest 2000 auto I've driven is Tony Bunting's red one - quite a lively performer, and quicker overall I'd say than my 2200 auto.

2000 auto's are not really happy at much over 60mph unless you like lots of noise. My original 1972 car was quite capable of 80mph+, but it just didn't seem decent to do too much of that.

Great cars around town and for leisurely day outs, not so good if you're a motorway hog!

Yes found that with mine. Over 60+ the noise does rise quite a bit. She'll sit at 80 all day, even seems to work better at 80 than 70. But as the carpet and sound proofing is shot gets a bit noisy. Around town and up to 60 she's as quite as a lamb. Even, dare I say it, gives the awesome v8 a run for it's money in the smooth quite stakes, well, never will be as good as the v8 but very graceful.

I do find that it can hold on to the kick down more than you may feel comfortable with.

Still even being the slowest of the range, she'll show a clean pair of heals at the lights if I let her. Just have to time it right. ;)

I went for a 10m blast to clear the oil in the exh box and it seems a bit nippier,,even got it up to 70! :)
Still got a little blow on the front pipe to manifold, seems a little loose, needs a new seaing ring maybe!
Must be just getting used to it or its just loosening up more after its lay up!
Going to use it for work this week! :)
I hope to get the log book through soon,,then I can start to advertise the reg number for sale!

Got the long awaited log book through this morn, and happily the reg number is free to be sold to the highest bidder.
The DVLA have made an error with the engine numbers letter, giving it an E instead of an L,and not marked its tax class as historic,so once that is sorted, will advertise plate for sale.

Still got an annoying blow from the exh/manifold joint!!
Anyone got a NOS 2000sc downpipe??? "3 box system",or for a 2 box and I will take a box off!
