Hi to you all

My name is Steve. Thanks for letting me join your elite group. Last week I purchased a 1972 (L) Rover P6 2000TC to do a partial restore project with my son. It failed an MOT in November last year on body and chassis corrosion. Also failed on some brake issues, but that problem is not as serious as the rust one! This car is going to need a lot of TLC! I have always been a lover of Rovers. I used to own 2 P5's in the early 70's and also owned an 820si in 1997 - 2004. My son has owned quite a few Rovers himself. He has has 25's 45's and a 75 as well as my old 820si when I was bought another car.
I am currently looking for some specific bits and would like to get these as soon as I can. The parts I need are the scraper seals (window weather guard strips) for all 4 doors as mine are totally shot to bits. With all the wet weather we are having right now they need to be changed as soon as really. Any information regarding attaining these parts is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you guys.

Hi Steve, A very warm welcome to the forum.

We have some suppliers listed in the relevent section of the forum. If i were you I'd call Mark Gray of MGBD, Geoff at Wins, or failing that you may find JR Wadhams have the parts you need. If you find nothing from these guys, you would probably manage to find something on ebay.

Hope that's some help :)

Whereabouts are you situated? (aside from in front of the computer ;) )

Rich

Hi Rich.
Thank you for the reply.
I took your advice as well as others on Facebook: Rover P6 Advice,Help,Tips! I looked on Wins International and found I can get a full set of scraper seals for £45. I was surprised as to how cheap they are. Gonna have to wait till end of next month though as got the MOT for my Scenic in April.
Many thanks again for your help.
I live just outside Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Steve :)

Not seen it around Lowestoft. I got quite upset yesterday as after finding more bad rust on me 2000TC. now probably gonna be at least 3-4 months before I get it back on the road.. When I start on the restore proper I will put updates on here. Also my mig welder is not man enough for the job. I need at least a 130 amp whereas mine is only 105. my friend and neighbour has said I can use his. So now I can get to work on her properly.

Well worth you chatting to guy. He's a paint and bodywork guy iirc. Where is the rust? A Clarke 105 was fine on mine once I'd updated the earth cable....

The rust is in rear passenger flooring, both inner sills, all 4 wheel arch sill ends and inner wing under bonnet. That's basically what I have found at the moment. Have added a few photos just to give an idea but photos not labelled.

Hi Stephen, I'm in North Lowestoft happy to help anyway I can. Great to see another P6 in Lowestoft area we will need to meet up sometime soon. I'm also the Rover P6 Clubs area organiser for Anglia region. Moved here from North London 3 year's ago. Surprised you've not seen me flying round may be I've been too quick ;-) wondering if your car was the P6 parked up in Fur Lane for a couple of years? Be good to catch up somewhere for a chat. Oh and Welcome to the Friendly world of Rover. I met another new owner from Yarmouth a couple of weeks ago called Mark the local P6 community is growing (y)

Hi guys
Sorry about photo album settings. I'll sort it out later tonight and repost the new link. I will keep my eye open for Buttercup, V8guy. Yes my P6 is the one that sat in Fir Lane. Looks relatively good on the outside, but .underneath is another story as you will see when I post the photo link. Still, I'm in no rush to get it on the road.

I believe that car was supposed to have had a full resto according to a friend of mine who's friend bought it from the restorer , he then sold it on after a year then it appeared on Firs lane sometime later and I never saw it move in the 2 or so years that it sat there. I only live around the corner from there left a note on it when I first spotted it for the owner, he never replied. It did start to look a bit rough around the edges good luck with it has it had the twin carbs put back on it belive it was sold on as a single carb.
If you need anything that I may be able to help with give me a shout.

A lot of what I have had to cut out is plating the restorer put in. It looks to me like the original rust was not cut out properly. There is much too much rust for it to have gone that bad in 2-3 years! Most of what you see is just on the nearside. I haven't really started cutting out the offside yet. I'm hoping the offside isn't going to be as bad!

You have to be ruthless in the battle against rust Steve. I think your assessment of the previous work is spot-on. There's nothing unusual in any of those pictures - apart from your TC having only one C :) - Good luck with the repairs. Looking forward to the progress.

I spent most of today sorting some bits out on the doors. I finished taking the remaining 2 door cards off on front offside and rear nearside. As I have been taking them off I have noticed that the 2 nearside and the front offside were pretty wet on the bottom 3rd of the card.. But on the offside rear door the card was wet right over the whole card. I know this will be due to the scraper seals being perished. A friend came up with the idea of me buying a sheet of hardboard and remaking them myself. I'll have a look around as to much the cards will be to replace and also the price of an 8'x4' sheet of hardboard. Think I know what the cheaper option is! My son and I have also had to lift the doors as they had all dropped. Fortunately none of the hinge pins were seized.
I mentioned before about my SIP 105 mig welder not being man enough. After speaking to a friend who is professional welder, it has been suggested it could well be my earth wire not making contact properly and to try changing that first. So I guess that's me sorted tomorrow! As my son goes back to sea tomorrow things are definitely gonna be slowed down till he comes home.
My wife has just said she wants to name our P6 'Minstrel' as in Black & White Minstrels, because the car is B&W. Lol
