I am new here , I have just finished a major refit on a 1972 Range rover classic and stumbled accross this site while having fun with the lumention installation/troubleshoot.

I have to say you have re-kindled my interest in the p6.

Any chance you could tell me what to look out for when buying them, rust traps, mechanicals, and other faults.

I just used of 2000L of argoshield restoring the range rover to give you an idea of how much welding was done and that I can weld but I would rather not have to do that again! Also an advantage with the range rover is that most outer panles are ally and survive well so all the welding is under bolt on panels so paint isnt so much of an issue. I dont do paint so would rather not have to spend a fortune on a re spray.

Whats the specs on the 4 and 8 cylinder engines and which of each are the best to go for. I dont do many miles and am already running 3 old v8's two of them rover so I am used to the fuel consumption- Gulp!

Also how much to pay, I am not rich, the 3 v8's have seen to that so price is an issue! I didnt find as many as I expected on ebay!

Any one around in south hampshire, I would love t see a p6 up close again!

Thanks for any help you can offer, I am doing my homework on the p6 first as when I bought my first Range rover (not the 72) I hadnt done any and it cost me dearly!!!!

Hi and welcome, Like your RR its not the exterior which are your problem area but the base unit. All exterior panels on the P6 unbolt or unscrew including the roof!
Sills seem to be an area for rust and a few other spots that others can tell you about, As you may see from my details I am from NZ where we have unsalted roads and an almost nil rust issue with P6's. The P6B (V8) has a fairly good fuel consumption figure ranging from 22 to 25 MPG for combined running and a we bit better for highway miles, depends if you run an auto or manual and what other mods you may have done ie electric fan electronic ignition head upgrades etc others have acheived 30 MPG with out thse mods, I dont think that the four cylinder models do hugely better than that and certainly dont have the V8 rumble.

Thanks for the reply. I spent a while in NZ and have alot of family out there, great place! A great place to drive a P6 too- you could pretend you were in the UK 40 years ago in some parts of NZ, your lucky!

Back to the cars, I did a bit of reading up today. I may be wrong but it seems the series one cars are the only uk tax exempt P6's and that doesnt inlcude any v8's?

If thats true I am thinking of a 2000TC as the power output didnt seem much shy of the v8, or am I very wrong?

No, there are plenty of tax exempt V8's including Series 2's, all cars originally registered at the time getting a "K" plate are, as are a lot on "L" plates. It's anything made before 31/12/1972 that qualifies.

Thanks for that guys I was in the process of working that out by looking at ebay lol

as I have 3 v8's already, on a 72 tax exempt I am not sure which to go for. whats the mpg on the tc like? what would you recommend?
