"How To Do It" - section ?

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

A poll!!
It would be nice to have an election with a definitive outcome...

Sorry, too political- i'll get my coat!

I like the wiki idea, I can install a wiki engine on our server, so it will be our own CRF wiki.

Before I get carried away, do more people think it's a good idea, or would you just prefer a forum "How To" section ?

Maybe a poll should be setup.

I'll go with what's easyer for us that are computer illiterate  and hope its also the easyer option for your good self Richard and any helpers

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

As much as I like the idea of a wiki, (I've already got a free wiki engine to install) I think in this instance it would be easier for users to post a thread, then all users can discuss other tips etc, then we can copy/move it to the how-to section and lock it.

If you think about some thing like rear brakes, somebody might do a full how-on on stripping and rebuilding (from memory Quattro did a good one) but then others may have tips such as Harvey's "take the pad/disc out to fully adjust handbrake" tip, and other tips about lowering diff etc..

So what I'm really saying is there's more than one way to skin a cat, so a bit of dicussion will produce a more concise guide, than just one person's experience.

Hope you get what I mean.

Either way I can start a poll.

I'd go with that. IMHO this is a great forum, why farm out some of the most helpful gems to another place like Wiki, which every time I've looked at it is riddled with errors and misinformation. Keep it in-house and we've got the lot in one place.

As said there's always more than one way to do things (that would be my way, and the wrong way, then... ) and we can distil all the info down into a single masterwork.

There will still be lots of things for the regular forum. Being told how to do something doesn't always mean the unexpected doesn't crop up along the way.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

One other thought, could these be limited access to those who've taken the trouble to sign up to the forum, that way it would be forum members who would see the most benefit, and it would encourage others to sign up to gain access, so increasing our numbers.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Yes yes yes and yes to the last four posts :D
Does this count as my vote :?:

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

if anyone wants an idea of how to do a really good write up, google a guy called "babalouie" or "kev" and look for his Porsche 911 and Skyline Hakosuka threads on performanceforums.com or Japanese Nostalgic Car.

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

I am not sure where to go with that knowledge - forum or wiki - and I don´t regard myselves entitled to vote on that one, as it is all down to what Richard or other webmasters or computer aces are willing to do... .

But I will do any "donkey work" (...so that´s what it is called in English...) as well (Typing ?)!!!

(I still am sure that I want one of the first printed and published versions though ! )

In my experience being told how to do something usually increases the chance of something unexpected cropping up

That one gets my vote.

That one too :D

The trick then would be getting to people to look in the "how to" section first before posting a question, but I think most people on this forum are intelligent enough to notice that sort of thing 8)

But THAT might be one of the easier things - at least trying to do so: just like with all the "FAQ"- hints you get, it would be useful to make a BIG sign (post) on the "entrance", mentioning the "How-To"- posts/section.

Whoever still gets into the forum asking something from there could be rerouted.

Should be enough, don´t you think ?

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

Tag !

Right.
I read it all.
I still do not know how/where/what with to jack Jimmy ...  .

No, I got the idea, no problem  :!:
But still, this reminded me of this "project", the "How-To"-section.

To supply one full report of all the jacking points with drawing(s) (PLEASE :!: :!: :!:), marked as "emergency, use standard jack" or "trolley jack/jack stands" and "use wood sized app. ...." and "no wood needed" - BOY, that would be nice !

(And all the rest too, of course !)

I would love to work on that if I can, but got no knowledge of the car to begin with ...

Tschüs !

stefan

(Edit - things that could go in the "How-To" section:
- Checking the autobox oil level - is there a short cut/cheat ? (This cannot be found here using "search" !)
- What (extra) tools and stuff to take on holidays ?

http://www.classicroverforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6163 Harveyp6 explains it all! :D

DANKE !!

(So, it is proven: it is ME that cannot find it via "search" .... as if I did not feel a right little plonker all along !)
(So I just NEED Harvey to explain it ALL !!! )
(No matter what he looks like ! :D )

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

I finally realised who MJH is, i thought 'explains it all' sounded all too familiar :)

Re: "How To Do It" - threads ?

This all sounds like a fantastic idea!!!!
Richard, is it going to happen? Please? (but maybe not the YouTube vids of Harvey eh Mr H?)
