I've bought a V8.

A year to the day, since the last one, and I've bought another V8 engined Rover. This time, it's a P6 3500 auto, series 2. It's a 1975 car, in Monza red, with black boxpleat leather, sundym glass, 3500S badging, and steering wheel, bootmount spare wheel, SD1 Vanden Plas alloy wheels (in gold  ) which has no tax, or MOT. It also comes with spare cylinder heads, and, tubular manifolds, and four spare fibreglass wings! The owner has sold the bumpers, exhaust, and petrol tank, but I've already tracked down a rear bumper, and petrol tank! I bought a couple of bits for my 2000 from the seller, and, when the price of the 3500 was reduced to a level I could justify, I bought it, unseen. I've paid for the car, and will be collecting it in the next week or so, on a car trailer.
The car is one that I remember seeing at shows when I was younger, and, it still looks okay, but is a project, and isn't perfect.
Here's a photo of the car, taken in 2006, by me. It doesn't look this good now, but, it should be an interesting project to be getting on with! The wheels in the photo are also gone, replaced with series 2 SD1 wheels.
If anyone of you know anything about the car, I'd be interested to hear more!

Well done on your new acquisition Fraser, sounds like a good project to get your teeth into, I'm looking forward to following your progress with it :)

Hi Fraser,

Great to hear that you have purchased a V8 :D Excitement plus!!

Just wondering though, why did the Rover deteriorate so quickly since 2006, given how good it looks in your photo? Why was the seller stripping bits off it, had it been involved in some sort of misadventure?

All the best with the new project!!
Ron.

Looks like a car with a whole lot of 'attitude'. Whereas your yellow Series 1 seems to me more reserved. Perhaps it is because of the blacked-out grille and low profile tyres. Gold wheels look okay on a Williams Renault Clio, but for my money they're a bit 'lairy' on the P6. Then again, Monza red, why not? Need pics!!! Ditch that AA badge sharpish. I too look forward to your eight cylinder adventures. And of course, photos, especially as you seem to have a good eye for a great shot.

That will keep you busy for a while!!
Hope he has let you have the furry dice as well! :D Very period! :D

That looks(ed) pretty good and hopefully shouldn't take too much effort to get it back up to scratch.

I can't quite see in tha photo, what wheels did it have?

There's nowt wrong with an old AA badge - practically mandatory to have an old AA or RAC badge on a classic car  .
:D Good news Fraser and hope you have found a good one. This should keep you out of mischief for a while. Of course, please keep us posted on all progress and plenty pic's of usual high standard.

Im tossing up wether to black out my grill too .
Quite like the look on the red body . Waiting to see an Almond body one on this forum .
May be black out the lower valance grill pieces too .
Ive got two good grills so blacking one out wont be a big mistake . Can wear one or the other with mood swings .
I wore my V8 badge in the middle for a while .
AA badge would be square type if in keeping with the year , but still looks corker in 50's style.
Nice car you have there Mr F

In that photo from 2006, it had series 1 SD1 alloys, which didn't really suit it, in my view. I don't know if I'll keep the alloys, or replace them with steels. If they've got good tyres, I'll run them until I wear the tyres out. If the car is in need of extensive welding, then I'll need to sell it on, but, I'm hoping that there's not much welding needed, if any, ideally, and that it's all fettling, and replacing parts.
It should be interesting to compare the series 1 2000 with the series 2 V8.
The 2000 still remains my favourite, particularly in light of all of the recent work, but hopefully the 3500 will give me lots to do during the summer, when I'm not at uni! I'm just glad I've got a summer job in place, to fund the V8!

Hi Fraser,

Interesting engine, from an early SD1 by the look of it. The elbows are a smaller diameter compared to those fitted to the P6B engine.

Bet you can't wait to pick it up :)

Ron.

bigger air trumpet on the air cannister too. so a bit quicker than your average p6 if all is well...

Congratulations Fraser on the new acquisition - excellent colour - hope you manage to track down all the components to required to have the V8 burbling by the summer. I have some bits and pieces given my winter engine refurb, will send you a PM.

Thanks James! Look forward to receiving your PM.
In other news, the MX-5 sold today, which frees up funds for the V8 project, and a bit of work on the 2000 too! I can't wait for the summer away from uni to get started on the V8! 8)
