Jinx's Record of Improvement

Today I displayed a level of dedication that even I didn't know I had in me. It was dry all morning, it was dry at two O'Clock when the coaters rang to say my wheels were ready. It was p***ing it down and nearly dark by the time I got home. But I pressed on with a full wheel swap in the rain. I RULE!

Also Julian off the forum sent me a couple of Black ETs, for which I could cheerfully kiss him, they also look excellent. The only thing to do now is get a picture, but it's too dark now.

If you want 3500s steels, tyres and trims or a pair of black leather teardrop headrests, see the for sale section, or just PM me anyway.

Finally a picture of the finished product, was it worth it? Well I had to get some tyres anyway so probably.

I took the wheels to 'Wheel Specialist' In Lenton, Nottingham. They coated them in "Power Silver" which is brighter than the standard powder coat silver, which can look a little too dark to me sometimes. They blasted, coated, re-valved, put the better part worn Continentals I'd found on, balanced and detailed them for me too. Nice black side walls and waxed wheels (The state high street places leave your wheels in when you get new tyres appalls me, brake dust, finger marks and tyre seal everywhere). All done for a reasonable price, not cheap as such but fair.

The wheel nuts got re-tapped nice and deeply by a mate of mine at the engineering company I used to work at (The joy of connections) and I set about sorting out the front grease caps. For those who don't know, they have rim around the bottom that rests on the hub and would seem to hold the wheel away from the hub a touch, although the Vitesse wheels have a groove in to allow for something like this, it's hard to check that they actually clear, I wasn't sure on mine. The grease caps also gave the SD1 centre caps a nudge and stopped them sitting in there properly. Mostly because I suffer a lack of inside work space, I decided to have a trip to Halfords and picked up a pair of universal 5 stud wheel spacers. They are Ripspeed items, and the thinnest ones they do are about 1.5mm-2mm ish and push the wheels out just enough to clear the grease cap base rim, and they allow the centre caps to sit in the wheel correctly. Money well spent... Speaking of which I did sit down and work out what it had cost me to put these wheels on: Wheels, Part Worn Tyres, Nuts, Centre Caps, Spacers, Refurb and I reckon it's cost me near enough £600  and some work for me on top of that. Way more than I intended, but I wanted them to look right. I might have saved a few quid painting them myself, but not that much.

Anyway, here's a picture of Jinx sporting fully refurbed wheels and ETs... So what's next on the list?

And they may have taken a little bit longer

I paid £50.00 for mine from ebay. :D

Oh and then another £50 for the centres, £320.00 for the tyres (5 brand new ones), £10.00 for the studs, £75.00 for the nuts, ermm.. I think that's about it

Yeah you're not far behind me there, although I only have 4 wheels... bugger (Note to self - keep five old nuts so I can put the spare on if I need to!). Were yours already good enough to use as you bought them at £50? You did well if they were! Where I slipped up was paying extra for wheels with so called decent tyres. They were all different, a couple weren't too clever tread wise and one was a bit leaky. I don't feel too bad though, my wheels and tyres are like new now, and I've spent that much on just a set of tyres for some of my cars before.

Just a little update because I wanted these pictures on here, a couple of Jinx at the NEC... It may never look more shiny than this again! It's amazing the difference in colour between the two pictures... the top picture is courtesy of Glen Monks.

There's definately something wrong with the red on that first picture, all the red is washed out, the rover signs, carpet etc...

Hi Adam,

awesome ride mate, loving the Monza red with the 15" alloys! I hate the 14" skinny steel wheels especially when they dont fill the wheel arches out! but thats my personel tast!

So cant wait to get my P6 painted in Monza & my new alloys fitted, Cragar are making them as I type this!

cragar-500p-1.jpg

These are 15x7", 4" either side of the back of the hub, will need a bit of D-post surgary  ,
will run it with 205/60/ if poss on the rear & If I can fity 195/60/15 front! with fresh red paint, colour coded sill covers & possible smooth boot lid with the plate located under the bumper, she should look wickedl! may also have twin stainless cherry bombs at each side!...can you guess I like Hot Rods!!!!! in my dream world 350ci 5.7 ltr Chevy V8 & 4-spd auto box would be mega!!! 8) :D , also bring the front ride height down a tad!

Hi Damian - You're clearly a man after my own heart, as you my gather by may user name! I love those Cragars and I think that those combined with a lower front stance is going to look amazing (Lowering the front is on my list of things to do, still). I reckon you might need to trim your D-Post to a single layer to get them to slot in but it'll be worth it for that look. Believe me, if I had the time, money, ability and space to do more to Jinx I'd be going a similar route to you. I'm sure I wouldn't have chosen the Vitesse wheels for their design if I'd had a large selection to choose from, more that it's about all that'll fit that I think looks decent on the car.

I can't wait to see those rims on your car Damian, although I might just have a massive attack of envy...

"I can't wait to see those rims on your car Damian, although I might just have a massive attack of envy"

LOL, better make sure I have the lockings wheel nuts fitted!! :)

This was my 79 Z28, restored as per the pics back in 2001, sold Dec 2002, 5.7 ltr 350ci, heaps of torque, it would run mid 14's at Santa pod! very much missed but I can say the P6 still has the edge in class & refinement!

Do you run a Hot Rod or used to?

Cheers Damian

That's very nice... I have a big thing for American Muscle, my dream which one day will come, is a '32 Deuce Roadster or Coupe (I'm not that fussy!) with a Small-Block Chevy in it. As yet I haven't had a rod, the P6 is the only V8 I've owned so far, I've never had the money or space to own anything completely impractical... yet.

You might just find a Duessenberg doesn't need a small block Chevy to get your eyes to the back of the sockets... very impressive motor. The clue is in the supercharger..

As the demented cowboy once said, "I think you misunderestimated me"... The Duessenberg is a very different car to a 32' Deuce. See below...

Hi Adam,Ha ha, I did have to read Chris's post twice,
So close... but so far away , well they both start with the Letter D! & that is one nice looking Deuce too! 8) . I have owned a fair few yank tanks in the past, my first being a 74 Dodge Challenger in 97, was working offshore at the time so hardly used it, next was a 87 Trans Am 3rg gen, then the 79 Z28 Camaro, then a 82 Z28 Camaro, followed by 4 P6's :D, the 4th being the current one, to be honest I used to think they were horrible cars but now I think its a wicked looking car, they just need the 15" alloys to fill out the wheel arches & hot motor, V8 rules!!! and decent paint , none of the awful publand lord hearing aid beige's almond or 'cigarette' browns, british Leyland at its best!..RIght ok dont want to upset the guys who like the standard P6  All classic cars that are still running/restored/ modified is fantastic, I love the show season, both classic & Hot Rod, my local garage owner is big into V8 muscle, runs a 55 chev, 65 Chev Elcamino & late model Ford F150 Lightning Pick up truck!!, also in local town near too me there is huge red 59 Chev Impala, awsome car, runs 13's I thinks at the pod!
My first V8 was a 1971 Rover P5 Coupe! that was back in 1991, I was 21 yrs old & using as my daily driver! great colour combo, Admiralty Blue with Silver Birch roof & webasto sunroof!!, now imagine it with 16~17" cragar alloys as I have ordered for P6, say 6x16" front & 8x16" rear! 350ci , 4 spr auto..so need to win the lotto..

OK, duly corrected, but not really any the wiser! I can see it isn't aDuessenberg, but what is it, and why is it known as a Deuce?

Dunces cap in the corner for me :D ........

Chris

It was a 1932 Ford Model B De Luxe (3 window) coupe that's been chopped and channelled amongst other things. I'm not sure of the origin of the term Deuce coupe but that definitely is one, like the Beach Boys used to sing about.

Completely off topic here though, time for a history lesson on hot rods in the lounge perhaps?

Found this 8)

Probably the most misheard lyric of all-time comes from the chorus of the song “Blinded by the Light,” popularized in 1976 by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. We hear: “Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche into the rotor in the night.” Obviously, it’s the use of the word douche that catches everyone’s attention. How does a douche get wrapped up, you wonder, and what’s it doing inside a rotor?

Ah, but here’s the rub. The lyric is actually written: “Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.” Believe it or not, Deuce is actually ‘60s slang for a 1932 Ford, or a “deuce coupe,” which explains why it can be revved up and run. Even more unbelievable, however, is the fact that this infamous lyric was actually penned by none other than Bruce Springsteen and performed on his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park. Of course, the Boss probably had a curious reaction the first time he heard his deuce coupe suddenly transformed into a feminine hygiene product.

"Wrapped up like a douche"

The term "Deuce" I believe refers to no more than the 2 in '32. Simplistic, but it was an old rodding nickname that stuck. I'll probably never get a real steel one, but if I haven't got one by the time I'm 50, then I'm officially having a mid-life crisis and buying one with a loan!

That's an impressive list Damian, and your old Admiralty Blue Coupe sounds like the perfect car for a 21 year old, you must have been fighting them off with a stick. I'm a touch younger than you (35 now) and got caught in the beginnings of the huge hike in insurance premiums, when I was just 18 my first 998cc Mini cost me £600 to buy, and £750 to insure .

Also I just remembered what got me in to P5B Coupes too, I met a guy when I was quite young who ran a black coupe with some really nice mild custom mods. It's all a bit vague now, but the one thing I remember is the guys' name was "Heinz". Some names you never forget...
