Jumping out of 3rd

I am not new to classics, but am a newbie to P6's.
I have a newly acuired 1975 2200 sc. The gearbox became quite noisy over a few weeks of use - sounding more like a 50's van - whining particularly in 1st ,2nd and 3rd. Also it had a knocking noise front the clutch are which disappeared when any pressure is put on the clutch pedal.
Checking out the fluid levels it was clear that it had been filled with pink ATF fluid which I changed and refilled with Miller's 20W/50.
It has reduced the whining by 95% and the knocking by about 75%, but has aquired the habbit of jumping out of 3rd on the overrun ( I don't recall it doin that before) ..any pointers?

If there is wear on any part of the external selection linkage it could prevent the selector in the box moving far enough to engage the detent and interlock properly, and that could cause it to jump out of gear, but it's probably an internal fault. You can get quite a good view of the linkage and the ends of the selectors from under the car to see if there's anything preventing full movement. The carpet often prevents full movement into REVERSE so I suppose the same thing could happen with THIRD but I've not experienced it personally.

Thanks for that. I will have a good look underneath when the weather dries up a bit, hopefully over the next few days - But it seems to have started (although I could be wrong!) when I changed the much, much thinner ATF to the thicker 20W/50 .... maybe the ATF masked the problem? ...or is the knocking noise part of the box problem?

It's possible the knock is part of the problem, if it disappears with your foot on the clutch it is inside the box, but it's difficult for me to know as I can't hear it.

I have taken advantage of the better weather to investigate a bit further using the pointers above.
Firstly, I have adjusted the clutch-having to reposition the operating arm as per instructions found in the forum - unfortunately it has shown a leaky slave.. so a new one is on order.
Secondly, I looked a the gear lever linkage rod which has no sleeve bearings fitted and the levers bottom sleeve bush is very deteriorated.... again, bits on order.
Progressing to inside the cabin the newly fitted carpet ( by the previous owner) did seem to be limiting gear lever travel, so it was cut away where necessary.
RESULTS.... albeit a sloppy gear change, it no longer jumps out of 3rd (can now feel it engage the detent), and the clutch biting point is in a better pedal position. The knocking sound is now even less noticeable .. perhaps the adjusting of the release lever keeps the bearing just touching the clutch diaphragm and is less noisy!
