Lady Charlotte - 1966 2000SC

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Although essentially the same car, an early '60s 2000 is a world apart from a '70s V8, each one of them having its own charms.
It must be a joy too to own such a nice example.
Apparently the colour looks a lot like "Pendelican white", the same as in my car.
Although not correct for the year, an excellent choice too!

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Sorry Dave but it should have accured to me when I looked at it for you, about the missing dash mat, especially since I was in MXC, my 66' 2000. There is only 5 weeks between them (by registration) and of course no dash mat either.
Glad you are pleased with your find anyway.

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Been out a couple of times in the "new" car. She's very comfortable, more so than the V8 but that could be down to the flat pleat seats. I didn't realise just how comfy they are until now. She's had a service now and a change of coolant. The old coolant was pretty brown so I put the hose in every orifice I could disconnect a pipe from and left it to run for a while until the water ran clear. Took the rad out and back flushed that too. The temp gauge sits at the top of the green section and the guy I bought it from said it had always sat there. I'll check the thermostat to make sure it's the right temp for the job, or maybe just replace it as part of the service. The points I got from Wins would not fit over the pillar on the dissy base plate so a bit of fettling required there. I spoke to Geoff at Wins this morning and he couldn't understand that one. As far as I can tell the dissy is original and standard. The old points slip off the pillar no problem but the replacement ones won't go on at all. She has a slight misfire every now and again and I'm hoping the points will cure that. The carb needs setting up properly too as she won't idle smoothly below about 900rpm. I tried the lift pin technique after adjusting the mixture screw but every time I lift the pin the engine dies. Then no matter which way I turn the mixture screw the engine idles slightly quicker and smoother before dropping to a rough idle again. The mixture screw is a bugger to get anything on to so I'm moving it around with a pair of long nose pliers, not ideal. Dug out my colourtune to have another go next weekend. I'll get a carb overhaul kit from Burlen's and service it too.

She has a bit of a drone that builds from around 55ish and it sounds very much like being in a light aircraft on take-off. I'll check the alignment of the prop-shaft and gearbox tailshaft at the weekend to make sure the marks align.

The most annoying bit is the rattling passenger side seat belt buckle. Weak spring I thing so need to sort that too.

Lots of different bits on the 4 cylinder engine that I need to identify so I will probably take the lazy route and post some pictures for people to identify. Very kind lot on this forum...... :D

She's getting lots of admiring looks every time I take her out.

Maybe Mr Dave drives the manly V8 while Mrs Dave will drive Lady Charlotte. That could work ok :D

 I did let her drive back on Sunday. We want to take both cars to the Moffat Show in a couple of weekends and she's never been too comfortable driving the V8. Partly due to the problems it had with gearchange when I first bought it but that's all sorted now. I do try to encourage her to drive the cars more often but she gets concerned that something will go wrong and she'll end up holding up traffic or get stuck across a junction and have irrate people sounding their car horns at her. I keep telling her not to worry about holding up traffic as they certainly won't care about holding her up.

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

If the worst problem you have is a rattling seat belt spring, then you've bought a good 'un! The take off drone is as likely to be exhaust generated - have a good look at the mountings and see if it is stressed to one side or the other anywhere. Be suspicious of the back box as well, when elderly they tend to collapse internally without necessarily having a blow externally. One of the clues is that the rest of the system "hums" a bit with the back pressure. You'd be surprised how much performance you can liberate by sorting it as well! Applies to V8's too.

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

what you want is a parts catalogue, great fro identifying those parts.

Have you got a wsm? I have a couple of Rover 2000 ones.

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Sounds like you've bought a great car, Dave! I found that mine didn't idle particularly happily, and had similar issues to yours, but a carb rebuild made a massive difference. In terms of adjusting the carb, burned fingers appear to be par for the course. As regards the drone, have you checked that the differential isn't running a little dry? Mine drones a bit, but I think the new universal joints will make a big difference. In terms of temperature, mine is running towards the lower end of the green scale on the guage, with the engine-driven fan. As regards the seats, I found the difference between the flatpleat and boxpleat ones was absolutely amazing. The car is much more comfortable now.
I look forward to seeing it at Moffat!

I'll check the diff when I change the gearbox oil and have a look at all the UJs. Chris's exhaust suggestion will be checked out too. As for Moffat, we'll be taking both cars to that one :D

Got a ROM Colin, but could do with a parts manual.

I'm still not sure which shade of white the car is. I have a brochure dated 1966 (publication 689/D) which lists options of Rover white with Sandalwood, Toledo Red and Ebony trim, but also have another one dated 1966 (publication 688) that lists Rover white with Sandalwood, Toledo Red and Buffalo trim?????

Is this colour Rover white then?

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Should be if it is 100% original, look in door shuts by wings and where roof bolts down for tell tale clues of repainting!!

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Item number: 190541280073 Not sure Dave if you were still after a dash mat but seen these on ebay Mick

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Mick

Thanks for the steer on dash mats. I've decided that if it didn't come with one then I'm not going to add one :D

Think I can put up with things sliding around the dash on the few ocassions the car will be out.....or simply not put anything on the dash to slide around :D

Dave

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Is that a definite Dave, didn't come with a dash mat. Seems strange as in the day people must have put things their which would have slid all over the place. Ie mobiles, iPods sat navs etc :D

According to the historians yes that is definite. I don't know about you Mick but I tend to stick my sat nav to the windscreen so it doesn't slide around

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!

Happy Days - I can confirm that things did slide all over the place without the dash mat! Mother solved this by wedging a box of Kleanex under the top shroud!

That seems a shame to me.

Yes I know. i'll take her out as much as I can in the summer (provided it's mostly dry) but she'll be stayingin over winter. I make up for it in the V8 though.

Re: Picking up my 2nd P6 this weekend!
