lower tensioner

Hi, really need some help and advice with regards the lower tensioner.

lower chain has been making a noise for a while, oil pressure seems ok, so decided to drop sump and sort them out.

checked the mains and big ends, which had seen better days, so decided to change them, all done no problem,

checked the lower chain and could see that it looked loose with the tensioner hardly touching it, and the tensioner looked to me as still being in its armed position, ( pad was only about quarter of inch from body), it just didnt look correct.

anyway took the tensioner off, cleaned and checked it, put it back together ( it is the non plug type) and the pad didnt want to move under spring pressure at all ( same as it was when i first looked at it on the car)

now found out if the tensioner is put back together and cable tied up tight, when the tie is cut the tensioner will move out correctly under spring pressure.

BUT this is where i really need help and advice, I have been trying to refit it with no success at all, after trying all afternoon i have give up for the day in total frustration!!!! Ive tried from the top and the bottem !! I have the rad out , lower rad pipe off, front grill off , and front bung ( which has been damaged in the past) out

Any help from some one who has done this job would be great.

Many thanks Steve

No real help, but I’ve done a lower tensioner R&R with the engine in situ myself. It’s not a fun experience. I feel your pain, it isn’t easy.

Steven, after your few words of moral encouragement, all the way from New Jersey, I went back out to the garage and tried again, first attempt failed, second attempt it went straight on, bolts lined up, all perfect.

When it was on I cut the cable tie, and under its spring pressure the pad jumped forward and made good contact with the chain, the chain is now much tighter than before, so hopefully now with the tensioner sorted and new bearings all round, I will have a quieter engine, sump on in the morning and try it out.

That's brilliant news Steve! It makes a good difference for sure.

I have long ago seen a strange rattle up front caused by the lower chain guide breaking its mountings and falling into the sump.
